GTM stands for go-to-market: the plan for how a product reaches the customers it is built for. A GTM Marketing Manager turns that plan into action. They decide which customers to target first, how the product will be sold, what each team needs to be ready, and how everyone will know whether the launch worked.

It is one of the best-paid areas of marketing in SalaryGuide’s data. The GTM category has a median total compensation of $168,500 in the US.

What does a GTM Marketing Manager do?

The role sits between product, marketing, sales and customer success, and coordinates all of them around a market. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Target market and segments. Defining the ideal customer profile and choosing which segments, industries or regions to go after first.
  • Route to market. Deciding how the product will be sold: through a sales team, through self-serve sign-up, through partners or a mix.
  • Launch planning. Building the launch plan and timeline, agreeing what each team owns and running the readiness checks before launch day.
  • Pricing and packaging input. Working with product and finance on how the product is priced, bundled and offered.
  • Sales readiness. Making sure sales and customer success teams have the training, materials and processes to sell and support the product.
  • Measuring the launch. Tracking pipeline, wins, adoption and time to first deal, and running a review after launch to decide what changes.

Some GTM roles focus on new products. Others focus on entering new regions or industries, or on improving how an existing product is sold. In companies with a GTM strategy and operations team, the role can also include planning sales territories and capacity.

GTM vs product marketing vs demand generation

The three roles overlap, and in smaller companies one person may cover all of them. The difference is in what each one owns.

A GTM launch, step by step

A typical launch plan for a GTM Marketing Manager looks like this:

  1. Define the target. Which customers, in which segment, have the problem this product solves, and how many of them are there?
  2. Choose the motion. Will they buy through sales, sign up on their own, or come through a partner?
  3. Agree the message and price with product marketing, product and finance.
  4. Build the plan and owners. Every team gets clear deliverables and dates, from website changes to sales training.
  5. Run readiness checks. Can sales explain it? Can support answer questions? Is the tracking in place?
  6. Launch and measure. Watch early signals, such as pipeline, sign-ups and the first deals, and fix what is not working.
  7. Review after launch. Decide what to repeat, change or stop for the next launch.

Skills a GTM Marketing Manager needs

  • Market thinking. Sizing segments, understanding buyers and choosing where to focus first.
  • Cross-team leadership without authority. Most of the people you depend on do not report to you.
  • Planning and project discipline. Launches have many moving parts and fixed dates.
  • Commercial understanding. How deals are won, how pricing affects them and what sales teams need.
  • Measurement. Setting the right launch goals and reading early data honestly.

In companies that measure marketing against revenue, GTM work often connects closely with revenue marketing, which aligns marketing goals with sales and revenue targets.

GTM career path

People reach GTM roles from product marketing, demand generation, sales strategy, consulting and product management. From a GTM Marketing Manager role, common next steps are Senior GTM Manager, Director of GTM or Go-to-Market Strategy, and Head of Product Marketing or VP of Marketing roles. For where GTM fits next to other marketing careers, see the marketing career path roadmap.

Open GTM jobs

As of October 14, 2026, SalaryGuide lists 1,100 open GTM jobs in the US. GTM titles vary a lot, from GTM Marketing Manager to Go-to-Market Strategy Lead and GTM Programs Manager, so read the responsibilities. A role that owns the launch plan and works directly with sales leadership is different from one that mainly coordinates timelines.

What hiring managers look for

GTM hiring managers usually want to see how you think through a launch from start to finish. Expect a case exercise, such as planning how to take an existing product into a new segment. They look for clear choices about who to target and why, a realistic plan for each team, and sensible measures of success. Explaining what you would not do is often as important as what you would.
