A CRM Manager looks after a company’s relationship with the customers it already has: the customer database, the segments built from it and the messages those customers receive by email, text, app notification and loyalty program. In SalaryGuide’s US data, the median CRM Manager earns $100,000 in total compensation.

Before comparing pay, check which kind of CRM Manager a job ad means. The title covers two quite different jobs, and this guide explains both.

Two jobs with one title

CRM marketing. In consumer brands, retail, travel, subscriptions and apps, CRM usually means customer marketing through owned channels. The CRM Manager plans and runs the messages existing customers receive and is judged on repeat purchases, retention and revenue from those customers.

CRM systems. In many B2B companies, CRM means the sales system, most often Salesforce or HubSpot. A CRM Manager there runs the platform: its data, fields, automation, reports and user access. That role usually sits in sales or revenue operations rather than marketing.

This guide focuses on CRM marketing. If an ad talks mainly about administering Salesforce for the sales team, it is the systems role, and pay and skills follow sales operations more closely.

What a CRM Manager does

  • The customer database and segments. Deciding how customers are grouped, for example by purchase history, value, engagement or risk of leaving, and keeping the data clean enough to trust.
  • The messaging program. Planning the calendar and automated journeys across email, SMS, push and in-app messages, from welcome series to win-back campaigns.
  • Personalization. Using what the company knows about each customer to make messages more relevant, within the limits of their consent.
  • Loyalty and rewards. In many retail and travel businesses, running or supporting the loyalty program.
  • Testing. A/B tests on content and timing, and holdout groups that show whether the program actually changes behavior.
  • Reporting. Repeat purchase rate, retention, churn, revenue per customer and customer lifetime value.

Common platforms include Braze, Klaviyo, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Iterable, Bloomreach and HubSpot, often connected to a customer data platform such as Segment. Much of the work involves building automated journeys, and our guide to marketing workflow automation covers how those are designed and maintained.

CRM sits close to several other roles, and companies draw the lines differently:

  • Lifecycle marketing usually covers the same channels with a focus on the customer journey stage by stage. Some companies use the titles interchangeably. Our guide to Lifecycle Marketing Manager salary covers that role and its pay.
  • Email marketing focuses on one channel, often with deeper responsibility for deliverability and email production. See Email Marketing Manager salary.
  • Retention marketing is a common name for the same goal: keeping customers and increasing their value.

What pushes CRM Manager pay up

  • Owning revenue from existing customers, with targets for repeat purchases, retention or customer value.
  • Proving incremental impact through holdout groups, not just reporting opens and clicks.
  • Data and segmentation skills, including SQL and comfort working with data teams.
  • Running several channels together, from email and SMS to push and in-app.
  • Leading people, such as CRM executives, designers and analysts.

CRM Manager career path

A common path runs from CRM Executive, Coordinator or Specialist to CRM Manager, Senior CRM Manager, then Head of CRM or Director of CRM, Lifecycle or Retention. Many people start in email marketing, and our Email Marketing Specialist job description shows the entry-level version of the work. Senior CRM leaders often move into broader customer marketing or growth leadership.

Open CRM jobs

As of October 14, 2026, SalaryGuide lists 712 open CRM jobs in the US. Check whether each ad describes CRM marketing or a CRM systems role, which platforms it uses and whether it owns revenue targets. For CRM pay next to other marketing roles, see how much marketers earn.

What hiring managers look for

CRM hiring managers usually ask you to walk through a program you built: the segments, the journey, what you tested and what it delivered. Many give a short exercise, such as designing a win-back journey for lapsed customers. They look for customer thinking, comfort with data and a habit of measuring real impact. Being able to explain a holdout test result clearly is a strong signal.
