Email is still one of the most direct channels a company has to its customers, and Email Marketing Managers own it: the strategy, the automated flows, the campaigns, the deliverability and the rules that keep it legal. In SalaryGuide’s US data, the median Email Marketing Manager earns $97,500 in total compensation.

The step up from specialist is a big one. The median Email Marketing Specialist earns $65,000, so moving into the manager role is worth about $32,500 at the median.

The two ranges do not overlap at all: the specialist 75th percentile ($75,000) is below the manager 25th percentile ($78,500). In email, the title change is the main way to move into a higher pay band.

Within the manager title, people with 2 to 4 years of experience report a median of $78,000 (10 submissions), and those with 4 to 6 years report $100,000 (21 submissions). Most title submissions come from in-house roles (32 of 42).

How email marketing pay grows with experience

The broader email marketing category, with 505 submissions across all levels, shows the full path:

Two steps stand out: a rise of $22,500 between the 2 to 4 and 4 to 6 year bands, which matches the usual move from specialist to manager, and $28,000 between the 6 to 8 and 8 to 10 year bands, where people move into senior and head-of roles. In the category, in-house and agency medians are almost identical, at $83,000 and $84,000, and work arrangement makes little difference.

What an Email Marketing Manager does

  • Strategy and calendar. Planning campaigns around launches, promotions and seasons, and deciding how often each segment hears from the brand.
  • Automated flows. Building and improving the emails that send themselves, such as welcome series, abandoned cart reminders, post-purchase messages and re-engagement campaigns. In ecommerce businesses, these flows can produce a large share of email revenue.
  • Segmentation. Sending different messages to different groups based on what they bought, what they clicked and how engaged they are.
  • Templates and production. Owning a set of email templates that work on mobile, in dark mode and for readers using assistive technology.
  • Testing and reporting. Testing subject lines, content and timing, and reporting on clicks, conversions, revenue per email, unsubscribes and spam complaints.
  • Deliverability and compliance. Making sure emails reach the inbox and follow the law.

Common email platforms include Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Braze, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, HubSpot and Iterable.

Deliverability: the skill that sets managers apart

An email that lands in spam earns nothing, so deliverability is where experienced Email Marketing Managers prove their worth. Gmail’s email sender guidelines set clear rules for anyone sending more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail accounts, including:

  • authenticating the sending domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC;
  • supporting one-click unsubscribe in marketing messages, with a visible unsubscribe link;
  • keeping the spam complaint rate reported in Google’s Postmaster Tools below 0.30%.

Beyond those rules, good deliverability comes from list hygiene: removing addresses that bounce, suppressing people who have stopped engaging and never buying or renting lists. Email Marketing Managers who can diagnose a drop in inbox placement, and fix it, are hard to replace.

The law: CAN-SPAM

In the US, commercial email is governed by the CAN-SPAM Act. The Federal Trade Commission’s CAN-SPAM compliance guide sets out the main requirements, including:

  • every marketing email must explain clearly how to opt out, and opt-out requests must be honored within 10 business days;
  • every message must include a valid physical postal address;
  • the law applies to business-to-business email as well as consumer email;
  • each email that breaks the law can bring a penalty of up to $53,088.

Email Marketing Managers usually own these processes, often with legal and marketing operations teams.

Measuring email properly

Open rates used to be the headline email metric. They are much less reliable today, because some email apps, including Apple Mail, load images automatically for privacy reasons, which registers opens whether or not the person read the email. Stronger teams focus on:

  • clicks and conversions;
  • revenue per email sent;
  • unsubscribe and spam complaint rates;
  • holdout tests, where a small group receives no email, to show what the program actually adds.

Email Marketing Manager vs CRM and lifecycle roles

Email is one channel within a wider customer marketing picture. A CRM Manager usually owns the customer data and several channels, from email to SMS and push, and our guide to CRM Manager salary covers that role. Lifecycle marketing covers the customer journey stage by stage across channels; see Lifecycle Marketing Manager salary. Many Email Marketing Managers move into one of those roles as their next step.

Email Marketing Manager career path

A common path runs from Email Marketing Coordinator or Specialist to Email Marketing Manager, Senior Email Marketing Manager, then Head of Email, Head of CRM or Director of Lifecycle or Retention Marketing. The entry-level version of the role is covered in our Email Marketing Specialist job description, which shows what employers expect at the start.

What pushes Email Marketing Manager pay up

  • Owning revenue from email, with clear targets for campaigns and flows.
  • Deliverability expertise, including authentication, domain reputation and fixing inbox placement problems.
  • Automation and segmentation skill, especially across email, SMS and push.
  • Testing discipline, including holdout tests that prove impact.
  • Leading people, such as specialists, designers and developers.

Open email marketing jobs

As of October 14, 2026, SalaryGuide lists 660 open email marketing jobs in the US. Check the platform named, whether the role owns deliverability and whether it has revenue targets. Those details separate specialist work from manager-level roles. For email pay next to other marketing roles, see how much marketers earn.

What hiring managers look for

Email hiring managers usually ask you to walk through a flow or campaign you built, what you tested and what it delivered. Many also ask a deliverability question, such as what you would check first if inbox placement suddenly dropped. They look for commercial focus, attention to detail and an honest view of metrics, including why open rates can mislead.

FAQs

How much does an Email Marketing Manager make in the US?

SalaryGuide’s median for Email Marketing Managers is $97,500 in total compensation, based on 42 salaries as of October 14, 2026. The middle half earns between $78,500 and $110,750.

How much more does an Email Marketing Manager earn than a specialist?

About $32,500 more at the median. The median Email Marketing Specialist earns $65,000 and the median Email Marketing Manager earns $97,500. The two pay ranges do not overlap.

What is email deliverability?

Deliverability is whether emails reach the inbox rather than the spam folder or nowhere at all. It depends on domain authentication, sender reputation, list hygiene and how recipients engage with the emails.

What does CAN-SPAM require?

According to the FTC’s compliance guide, marketing emails must explain how to opt out, honor opt-outs within 10 business days and include a valid physical postal address. The law also applies to business-to-business email.

Are open rates still useful?

Less than they used to be. Some email apps load images automatically for privacy, which records opens that did not happen. Clicks, conversions, revenue per email and holdout tests are more reliable measures.
