Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Report and write stories each week, including breaking news, trending topics, features and event coverage
  • Regularly pitch, shoot, edit and publish video for websites, YouTube and social platforms, with particular emphasis on compelling vertical video
  • Create social-media posts tailored to each platform, engage audiences and use performance insights to improve future work
  • Conduct interviews in person, by phone or virtually, and research and gather information from various sources
  • Collaborate across the newsroom and with Florida's statewide teams on visual, social and multiplatform storytelling
  • Gain hands-on experience in:
  • Covering breaking news, weather and hurricanes, sports, features and politics
  • Creating vertical video, social posts, live updates and other platform-specific storytelling designed to reach and engage new audiences
  • Reporting, writing, photography, videography and watchdog journalism
  • Participation in training led by veteran journalists on topics such as interviewing, writing on deadline, video production, social-media best practices, ethics, source development and open records

Requirements

  • Enrolled in or recently graduated from a journalism program (junior year or beyond required)
  • Strong writing, research and fact-checking skills; familiarity with AP style
  • Comfortable with AI and automation and experience using it to enhance journalism
  • Critical thinking, adaptability and attention to detail
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and the minimum liability insurance required by state law
  • Availability for evening and weekend work
  • Ability to pass a background check
