Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Vice President, Marketing Location: United States | Full-Time | Remote / Hybrid / On-site Reports To: Chief Executive Officer The Executive Challenge We are looking for a Vice President of Marketing to determine how the organization competes for attention, builds market credibility, develops customer relationships, and converts marketing opportunities into measurable business value. This position carries responsibility for the overall effectiveness of the marketing organization, from setting market priorities and directing brand development to managing campaign investments and evaluating commercial outcomes. The VP will establish the marketing agenda, determine where resources should be concentrated, and ensure that the company's market-facing activities are coordinated, purposeful, and financially accountable. The successful candidate will bring executive-level marketing judgment, a strong understanding of customer behavior, and the ability to lead teams through changing market conditions. This is not simply a campaign management position: it requires ownership of marketing direction, organizational performance, and the systems that support consistent execution. What You Will Be Accountable For Setting the Marketing Agenda Define the company's overall marketing direction and translate corporate objectives into clear marketing priorities. Determine which audiences, customer segments, and market opportunities deserve the greatest attention and investment. Establish annual marketing objectives and allocate resources according to strategic importance and expected business impact. Advise executive leadership on market positioning, brand opportunities, customer engagement, and marketing-related business decisions. Reassess priorities as customer expectations, competitive conditions, and organizational needs evolve. Building a Distinct Market Identity Establish the principles that guide how the company presents itself to customers, partners, industry participants, and other relevant audiences. Develop a coherent positioning strategy that communicates the organization's capabilities and differentiates its offerings. Oversee corporate messaging, brand standards, content direction, and the consistency of external communications. Identify opportunities to strengthen market credibility through thought leadership, industry participation, customer education, and relevant media exposure. Ensure that brand development reflects the company's actual capabilities, commercial objectives, and long-term reputation. Directing Marketing Investment Take ownership of marketing budget planning, allocation, forecasting, and expenditure oversight. Evaluate proposed campaigns and initiatives according to audience relevance, strategic value, execution requirements, and expected outcomes. Establish a consistent process for reviewing campaign proposals before resources are committed. Examine marketing performance to identify ineffective spending, underdeveloped opportunities, and areas where additional investment may be justified. Work with Finance to maintain reliable marketing forecasts and explain material differences between planned and actual expenditure. Recommend reallocations when performance evidence or business priorities warrant a change in direction. Turning Market Knowledge into Action Direct research into customer needs, buying behavior, competitive positioning, and emerging market opportunities. Ensure that marketing plans reflect evidence rather than assumptions about audience preferences or market demand. Work with Product and Business Development to identify gaps between customer expectations and current market offerings. Evaluate changes in industry messaging, customer engagement practices, and marketing channels. Convert research findings into practical decisions concerning positioning, campaign selection, customer communication, and market development. Maintaining Commercial Relevance Partner with Sales and Business Development to establish how marketing contributes to qualified opportunities and commercial progress. Develop consistent methods for evaluating campaign-generated interest, customer engagement, conversion, and pipeline contribution. Coordinate marketing support for new offerings, business initiatives, strategic partnerships, and customer programs. Review the effectiveness of marketing communications at different stages of the customer decision-making process. Establish shared expectations with commercial teams for lead quality, follow-up, feedback, and performance reporting. Identify opportunities to improve customer retention, strengthen existing relationships, and increase engagement with relevant offerings. Leading the Marketing Organization Determine the appropriate structure, responsibilities, and capabilities of the marketing team. Establish clear ownership for brand development, campaigns, digital channels, content, research, and marketing performance. Recruit and develop marketing leaders who can operate independently within an agreed strategic framework. Set standards for planning quality, execution discipline, communication, and performance accountability. Oversee external agencies and specialist providers, ensuring that their work meets established requirements and delivers appropriate value. Build practical management processes that improve coordination without creating unnecessary layers of approval. How Success Will Be Judged The VP will be evaluated on the quality of marketing decisions and the results they produce, including: Clear alignment between marketing priorities and corporate objectives. Stronger and more consistent market positioning. Effective allocation and control of marketing resources. Improved campaign performance and measurable audience engagement. Meaningful contribution to customer acquisition and commercial opportunities. Better coordination between Marketing, Sales, Product, and Business Development. Reliable performance reporting and evidence-based marketing decisions. Development of a capable marketing leadership team and scalable operating practices. Specific targets will be agreed with executive leadership based on the organization's business model, current market position, and marketing maturity. The Executive We Want to Meet Career Experience 20+ years of progressive professional experience in marketing leadership, brand management, market development, or related fields.
