Job Description

Responsibilities

  • The social media coordinator is a member of the Marketing and Brand team in Marketing and Communications, a division committed to advancing Virginia Tech through mission-driven, audience-focused, measurement-proven practices.
  • The social media coordinator will bring innovative, enterprising ideas to the social media team and will stay current with emerging technologies, platforms, and social media best practices.
  • The social media coordinator must demonstrate good professional judgment, follow university brand guidelines, and adhere to university policies and procedures.
  • The social media coordinator is a member of the social media team within Marketing and Brand and reports to the associate director of social media.
  • This person will work collaboratively with members of the editorial team, including marketing, media relations, visual content creators, unit-based communications directors, and the creative team.
  • Guided by the university’s social media strategy, the social media coordinator will primarily collaborate with many campus partners to create, execute, and monitor social media campaigns.
  • The coordinator will also engage in a variety of community management activities, as directed by the associate director of social media, which includes managing editorial-focused social media accounts and monitoring other social media platforms on behalf of Virginia Tech.
  • The social media coordinator must maintain a level of confidentiality with sensitive situations.
  • The coordinator must be able to work nights, weekends, and hours outside of the traditional workday especially in times of heightened activity such as snow days, large events, and unexpected crises.
  • The social media coordinator will perform this work in a manner that is accessible, inclusive, and welcoming to diverse audiences.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience producing content (graphics, written, video, photos) for social media and/or other digital platforms
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing social media analytics and creating reports to inform social media strategy
  • Demonstrated experience planning, executing, and monitoring communications campaigns
  • Demonstrated understanding of audience-platform relationships and how that can affect messaging and best practices
  • The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
  • Uncommon Work Schedule – (Rotating Shifts, Weekend, Nights)

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or another related field
  • Marketing experience
  • Crisis/issues communications experience
  • Prior experience in higher education social media management with demonstrated achievements and progressive responsibilities
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools
  • Familiarity with Canva
  • Experience using social media management tools and apps
  • Familiarity with website content management systems
