Job Summary

Own the media storytelling and public outreach for Johns Hopkins Medicine, turning complex biomedical topics into accessible narratives and shaping external visibility through media relations and event support.

  • Narrative Development: Plan and write high quality stories across electronic, print, web, video and media outlets.
  • Media Relations: Build relationships with faculty and media to advance institutional awareness and coverage.
  • Events & Internal Comms: Plan collateral and support press conferences, symposia, town halls and leadership updates.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Plan, manage, edit and write narratives for JHM to support our strategic priorities.
  • Identify stories and produce high quality written materials for JHM electronic, print, web, video and media outlets.
  • Stories include but are not limited to research news and translating complex business initiatives or biomedical research into language clear and comprehensible to readers unfamiliar with the subject matter; feature articles and stories about institutional initiatives and programs and/or faculty profiles.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with faculty, staff and members of the local and national media to provide media relations services to advance public awareness of Johns Hopkins Medicine’s mission and achievements.
  • Assist in planning, developing collateral material, and implementing media relations and internal communications to support various events including but not limited to press conferences, symposia, town halls and leadership internal communication.

Requirements

  • Master's or Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public relations or closely related field required.
  • Advanced degree in related field preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in journalism, media relations, medical reporting or science writing is required.
  • Requires demonstrated experience in high quality writing and editing, working successfully on deadline and designing and implementing communications plans and strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising and implementing effective and external communications plans and strategies and in editing/writing high-quality mainstream or academic publications.
  • Flexible and available to travel to Baltimore on an as-needed basis.

Preferred

  • Experience with media relations in healthcare or academic medicine.
  • Strong editorial judgment and storytelling skills.
