Freelance Media Relations Specialist

Responsibilities

• Craft press releases. Write and distribute press releases to announce new initiatives and promote a positive public image.
• Build media relationships. Establish and nurture relationships with media outlets to secure media coverage and increase brand visibility.
• Manage press conferences. Coordinate and host press conferences to share important news and answer questions from the media.
• Respond to media inquiries. Serve as the company’s spokesperson and primary point of contact for media inquiries.
• Develop crisis communication plans. Prepare crisis management strategies to respond to potential issues that could impact public opinion.
• Collaborate with stakeholders. Work closely with stakeholders and PR managers to ensure alignment in communication strategies.
• Track PR campaigns. Use market research and analytics to assess the effectiveness of PR campaigns and make improvements as needed.

Requirements

• Several years in media relations, communications, or PR—ideally in legal, crisis, health or related fields.
• Demonstrated success booking executives on broadcast and top-tier podcasts and securing feature coverage from top-tier publications.
• Existing relationships with journalists, podcasters, or media gatekeepers (or proven ability to build them).
• Experience preparing spokespeople for high-stakes media appearances.
• Understanding of the new media landscape—podcasts, newsletters, social platforms—and how influence flows through and across these channels.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work across time zones and accommodate media schedules.
