Marketing teams now need video for almost everything: ads, social posts, product demos, customer stories, events and training. Video Producers make that possible. They take an idea from brief to finished film, managing the script, the shoot, the edit and every version the channels need.

In SalaryGuide’s US data, the median Video Producer earns $80,000 in total compensation, and the wider video production category reaches a median of $140,000 for people with 8 or more years of experience.

The biggest step comes between the 6 to 8 and 8 to 10 year bands, a rise of $33,000. At that level, people often lead video teams, run an in-house studio or set the creative direction for video across a brand.

In-house roles pay a little more than agency roles across the category, at $82,000 against $77,000. Remote video roles have the highest median, $86,500, but are the smallest group at 96 submissions, likely because most production work needs people on set.

What a Video Producer does

Video production in marketing runs in four stages, and a Video Producer is responsible for all of them.

Pre-production

  • turning a creative brief into a script, storyboard and shot list;
  • setting the budget and schedule;
  • booking crew, talent, locations and equipment;
  • arranging permits, talent releases and call sheets.

Production

  • running the shoot day, either directing or managing a director and crew;
  • making sure every shot needed for every version is captured;
  • keeping to time and budget.

Post-production

  • editing, or managing editors, motion designers and sound;
  • adding captions, graphics and music;
  • running reviews and approvals with stakeholders.

Delivery

  • producing every version the channels need, such as landscape for YouTube, vertical for TikTok and Instagram Reels, and square for some feeds;
  • cutting shorter versions, such as 6, 15 and 30 second ads;
  • organizing files so the team can find and reuse footage.

Common tools include Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro for editing and motion, and review tools such as Frame.io for feedback.

Producer, editor or videographer?

Job titles in video are used loosely, so check the responsibilities:

TitleMain focus
Video ProducerOwns the project: budget, schedule, people and delivery. Often also directs, shoots or edits in smaller teams
Video EditorOwns the edit: story, pace, sound and finishing
VideographerOwns the camera work: lighting, framing and capture on the day
Motion DesignerOwns animation and graphics

In a small marketing team, one person often does all four jobs. At an agency, the producer role is usually closer to project management, coordinating specialists rather than making the film themselves.

In-house studio vs agency

In-house, a Video Producer makes video for one brand across many formats, often with a small team or as a one-person crew. Turnaround is fast, the volume is high and you build a deep understanding of the brand. Short-form social video is a large part of the work, so producers often work closely with social media and paid social teams.

At an agency or production company, the projects are usually bigger and more varied, with larger crews and budgets, but you work to client briefs and approvals.

Many producers work freelance for part of their career. Day rates vary widely by city, specialism and the equipment you bring.

What pushes Video Producer pay up

  • Leading people and budgets. Running larger shoots and managing crews or a team.
  • Range across formats. From high-end brand films to fast social content and paid ads.
  • Creative direction. Developing the ideas, not just executing them.
  • Performance awareness. Understanding which video performs in paid and organic social, and why.
  • Motion and post skills. Strong editing and motion design add value in small teams.

Video Producer career path

A common path runs from Production Assistant or Junior Video Producer to Video Producer, Senior Video Producer, then Head of Video, Video Director or Creative Director. Some move toward art direction and broader creative leadership. Our guide to Creative Director vs Art Director explains how those roles differ. Others specialize in social video, where the Social Media Manager career path and Paid Social Manager salary are useful comparisons.

Building a reel that gets interviews

Your reel is your main evidence. To be considered for better-paid roles:

  • open with your strongest 30 seconds;
  • show range, from a brand film to short social pieces;
  • label your role on each piece: producer, director, shooter or editor;
  • include one or two results where you can share them, such as views, completion rates or campaign outcomes.

Open video production jobs

As of October 14, 2026, SalaryGuide lists 1,491 open video production jobs in the US. Check whether each role is mainly producing, shooting or editing, how much travel is involved and whether you will manage a budget or crew. What hiring managers look for

Video hiring managers watch your reel before anything else. In interviews they usually ask you to walk through one project: the brief, the budget, what went wrong and how you fixed it. For in-house roles, they also want to know how fast you can work and how you handle feedback from many stakeholders. Some will set a short editing or planning exercise.
