Copywriter salary: junior to senior, agency vs in-house
Published by SalaryGuide, with recruiter insight from our sister company, Search for Hire.

The median Copywriter in the US earns $75,000 in total compensation, and the median Senior Copywriter earns $96,000. That $21,000 step is one of the biggest pay levers in SalaryGuide’s copywriting data.
Some other things people expect to matter turn out not to. Agency and in-house copywriters earn almost exactly the same, and working remotely barely moves the number. This guide covers what does change copywriter pay, level by level.

| Benchmark | Copywriter | Senior Copywriter |
|---|---|---|
| 25th percentile | $70,000 | $88,000 |
| Median | $75,000 | $96,000 |
| 75th percentile | $84,000 | $103,000 |
| 90th percentile | $95,000 | $118,000 |

Both ranges are tight. The middle half of Copywriters earn between $70,000 and $84,000, a spread of only $14,000. That suggests employers price the role in a fairly consistent way, which makes the title and the work behind it more important than negotiating at the edges.
Agency vs in-house: no real difference
| Title | In-house median | Agency median |
|---|---|---|
| Copywriter | $75,000 (127 submissions) | $75,000 (71 submissions) |
| Senior Copywriter | $95,500 (102 submissions) | $96,000 (82 submissions) |
The broader copywriting salary category, which covers every level across 1,215 submissions, shows the same pattern: $88,000 in-house against $90,000 at agencies.
The work is different, though. Agency copywriters write for several clients and usually work in a creative team with an art director, pitching ideas to clients. In-house copywriters write for one brand, often across more channels, from the website and product interface to emails, sales materials and campaigns. Choose based on the work you want, not on an expected pay difference. Our guide to agency vs in-house marketing salaries covers the tradeoffs across other marketing roles.
How copywriter pay grows with experience
Within the Copywriter title, most submissions come from people with 2 to 4 years of experience, with a median of $74,000 (113 submissions). At 4 to 6 years, the median is $80,000 (62 submissions). The jump to Senior Copywriter matters more than the extra years: Senior Copywriters with 4 to 6 years of experience report a median of $99,000 (109 submissions).
The copywriting category shows where the career can go:
| Experience | Median total compensation | Submissions |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 2 years | $61,000 | 70 |
| 2 to 4 years | $75,000 | 420 |
| 4 to 6 years | $95,000 | 399 |
| 6 to 8 years | $110,000 | 148 |
| 8 to 10 years | $130,000 | 74 |
| 10+ years | $139,000 | 62 |

The higher bands are likely to include copy leads, associate creative directors and heads of copy, which helps explain the growth after year 6.
Copywriter job titles and levels
The titles differ slightly between agencies and in-house teams:
| Level | Agency title | In-house title |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Junior Copywriter | Junior Copywriter or Associate Copywriter |
| Mid | Copywriter | Copywriter |
| Senior | Senior Copywriter | Senior Copywriter |
| Lead | Associate Creative Director (copy) | Lead or Principal Copywriter, Copy Lead |
| Leadership | Creative Director | Head of Copy, Copy Director, Creative Director |
At agencies, the route upward is usually through creative leadership: an Associate Creative Director owns the work of several creative teams, and a Creative Director owns the creative output for clients. In-house, the route often goes through owning brand voice and messaging across the company.
What pushes copywriter pay up
- Moving to senior level. The title change is worth about $21,000 at the median.
- Specialist copy. UX and product writing, technical B2B copy, healthcare and pharmaceutical copy (where medical and legal review is part of the job) and direct-response copy tied to sales often pay above general marketing copy.
- Owning brand voice. Writing and maintaining the voice and messaging guidelines other writers follow.
- Concepting, not just writing. At agencies, copywriters who lead campaign ideas, not only headlines, move toward creative leadership faster.
- Results you can show. Tests where your copy improved sign-ups, click-through or sales carry weight with in-house employers.
Many teams now use AI tools to produce first drafts. That has raised the value of the skills tools struggle with: a clear idea, a distinctive voice, judgment about what to cut and the ability to explain why one line works better than another.
Location and work arrangement
Location matters more than work arrangement. California copywriters report a median of $82,500 (32 submissions), about $7,500 above the national Copywriter median. By work arrangement, the Copywriter medians are $78,000 on-site, $75,000 hybrid and $72,000 remote, a spread of only $6,000.
Freelance copywriting
Many copywriters freelance alongside a job or instead of one. Freelance pay is usually quoted per project or per day rather than as a salary, and it varies widely by specialism. Our guide to freelance marketing rates by specialty covers how to set and compare rates.
Building a portfolio that earns more
Your portfolio, often called your book at agencies, is the main evidence for your level. To be considered for senior roles, it should show:
- a range of formats, from short headlines to longer sales or website copy;
- at least one campaign idea you led, not just executed;
- the problem each piece solved and, where you can share it, the result;
- before-and-after examples where your editing improved someone else’s copy.
Our guide on how to build a marketing portfolio covers structure and presentation.
Open copywriting jobs
As of October 14, 2026, SalaryGuide lists 1,805 open copywriting jobs in the US. Many ads now include pay ranges, so compare the range with the title tables above. A role advertised as Copywriter that asks you to lead concepts or own brand voice is closer to senior-level work. For copywriting pay next to other marketing roles, see how much marketers earn.
What hiring managers look for
Copy hiring managers look at your portfolio first and your resume second. Many set a short writing test, such as headlines and body copy for a product brief. They look for ideas, not just clean sentences, and for range: can you write a punchy ad line and a clear product explanation for the same brand? For senior roles, expect to talk through how you would brief and review other writers.
