Job Summary

Own and drive the agency's strategic communications, including executive counsel, media relations, and departmental leadership, with a focus on coordinating across MMB and advising the Governor's cabinet.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Developing and leading strategic communication, public relations, outreach, and marketing initiatives consistent with the agency’s mission and vision
  • Providing executive-level communication counsel and coaching to the Commissioner and senior management
  • Directing media relations activities within MMB and ensuring enterprise-wide coordination by advising and consulting with high profile leadership
  • Serving as a key communications advisor to the Governor’s cabinet
  • Providing managerial, supervisory, and operational oversight to the communications department

Requirements

  • Minimum Qualifications
  • - At least five (5) years of experience executing major communications workstreams, such as media relations, public information, internal communications, public outreach, or digital marketing strategy.
  • Experience must include:
  • - Demonstrated leadership, which can include any of the following:
  • - Experience as a supervisor, team leader, lead worker, or project lead in a communications or marketing environment.
  • - Completion of a State leadership development program, such as Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI) or Senior Leadership Institute (SLI), or completion of a similar or equivalent leadership program through another organization; OR
  • - A paid or unpaid position leading a program or chairing a committee related to communications or marketing. The experience must include 1+ years of identifying issues, goals, and strategic actions and 100+ hours per year time commitment.
  • - Serving as a spokesperson on behalf of or providing consultation to executive leadership sufficient to manage media inquiries and respond to high-profile, controversial, or time-sensitive communication issues.
  • - Interpersonal skills sufficient to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • - Communication and writing skills sufficient to convey complex and sensitive information to a variety of audiences, including MMB staff, the Governor’s Office, state agency leaders, elected officials, and the public.

Preferred

  • Preferred Qualifications
  • - At least seven (7) years of experience executing major communications workstreams, such as media relations, public information, internal communications, public outreach, or digital marketing strategy
  • - A master’s degree in communications, journalism, or public relations.
  • - Experience leading communications strategy during organizational change, crises, legislative sessions, or other high-stakes, high-visibility initiatives.
  • - Experience providing supervisory oversight to a communications team.
  • - Established relationships with local, state, and national media outlets.
  • - Experience working with government communications (municipal, county, state, federal, or Tribal) or navigating public data, legislative processes, public records laws, or government accessibility requirements.
