Job Summary

Own the external communications engine for a correctional agency, coordinating media relations, public information, and crisis response to deliver accurate, timely public information across safety, operations, and community reintegration audiences.

  • Serve as the spokesperson and adviser to the Commissioner on external matters.
  • Oversee PIO, FOI, and Legislative Liaison units to align messaging and information access.
  • Lead strategic communications and crisis communications to protect public safety and inform diverse stakeholders.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • directing agency communications and public relations.
  • oversee the Office of Public Information (PIO), the Freedom of Information Unit, and the Legislative Liaison Unit.
  • as the agency spokesperson, serve as an advisor to the Commissioner on external matters that may impact the agency.
  • lead media relations and manage strategic communications; and
  • communicating information related to public safety, agency operations, correctional facilities, rehabilitation initiatives, and community reintegration efforts;
  • responding to fast-moving situations and helping ensure accurate and timely public information dissemination.

Requirements

  • NOTE: Applicants will be required to pass a Criminal Background Check
  • This position is full-time, following a first shift schedule, 40 hours a week, with the ability to telework.

Preferred

  • Experience representing an organization at media events, conferences, and public speaking engagements;
  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with media, agency leadership, and other stakeholders;
  • Experience creating written, edited, and designed communications that obtain measurable results and engage diverse audiences;
  • Experience drafting press releases, agency testimony and executive level speeches;
  • Experience developing crisis communication strategies that ensured timely, accurate information sharing and reduced misinformation;
  • Experience in digital and traditional media platforms including social media;
  • Experience performing communications, public relations, marketing, or media relations duties at progressively higher levels of responsibility;
  • Experience planning and developing communications and media strategy;
  • Experience conducting public relations and media training for agency staff;
  • Experience organizing and prioritizing high volume communications activities with measurable result.
