Job Summary

Own the Department of Correction's external communications program, serving as the agency spokesperson and coordinating public information, FOI, and legislative liaison activities to shape accurate public messaging and rapid response to incidents.

  • Lead agency-wide communications strategy and crisis-information processes.
  • Oversee the Office of Public Information, FOI Unit, and Legislative Liaison operations.
  • Advise the Commissioner on external matters impacting the agency and manage media relations.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Direct agency communications and public relations programs for the Department of Correction
  • Oversee the Office of Public Information (PIO), the Freedom of Information Unit, and the Legislative Liaison Unit
  • Serve as the agency spokesperson and advisor to the Commissioner on external matters that may impact the agency
  • Lead media relations and manage strategic communications
  • Communicate information related to public safety, agency operations, correctional facilities, rehabilitation initiatives, and community reintegration efforts
  • Respond to fast-moving situations and ensure accurate and timely public information dissemination

Requirements

  • Pass Criminal Background Check

Preferred

  • Experience representing an organization at media events, conferences, and public speaking engagements
  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with media, agency leadership, and other stakeholders
  • Experience creating written, edited, and designed communications that obtain measurable results and engage diverse audiences
  • Experience drafting press releases, agency testimony and executive level speeches
  • Experience developing crisis communication strategies that ensured timely, accurate information sharing and reduced misinformation
  • Experience in digital and traditional media platforms including social media
  • Experience performing communications, public relations, marketing, or media relations duties at progressively higher levels of responsibility
  • Experience planning and developing communications and media strategy
  • Experience conducting public relations and media training for agency staff
  • Experience organizing and prioritizing high volume communications activities with measurable results
