Job Description

Position Overview

The Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and executing communications activities for The Cancer Network. The Communications Specialist’s duties include creation and distribution of the newsletter, drafting press releases, maintaining media contact lists, developing and distributing promotional materials for training and webinar sessions, and growing the web and social media presence.

The Cancer Network is a global, fully-remote nonprofit that works to improve the lives of LGBTQIA+ cancer survivors and those at risk by educating our communities about how to minimize our cancer burden; training healthcare providers to be more welcoming; and advocating for an expanded focus on our communities in mainstream tobacco and cancer organizations, the media, and research. We are committed to grounding this work in anti-racist and anti-sexist activities and countering the deleterious social determinants of health.

Representative Duties

Communications Activities

  • Ensures agency-wide communications activities are professional, responsive to stakeholders, and impactful. 
  • Leads the development and distribution of the Network’s monthly newsletter to highlight advances in our field (LGBTQIA+ tobacco/cancer/health) and showcase our own activities. 
  • Leads and manages social media accounts to achieve growth in engagement and followers. 
  • Drafts and edits press releases, memos, blog articles, and other publications as requested by the Executive Director
  • Works collaboratively with the team to identify “news-worthy” items to help apprise our stakeholders of advancement in our field. 
  • Engages entire staff team in communications planning, ensuring that Network programming is  widely promoted and that grant deliverables specific to communications and media are met and that these are documented
  • Serves as strategic leader for ad development & placements, to include Google Adwords, paid education campaigns and the like. 
  • Provide minor updates to the website and coordinates with web development contractors for more in-depth updates
  • Provides strategies to maximize potential for engagement

Project Management and Data Collection

  • Creates and monitors outcome measures to ensure communications activities are impact driven.
  • Creates and maintains databases, projects, and portfolios within Asana and Airtable to track projects, tasks, and engagements
  • Consistently updates project management systems
  • Collects specific and measurable targets for social media, newsletter, earned media, annual report and news
  • Coordinates frequent meetings and touch points with staff and stakeholders as needed
  • Milestones and project progress are regularly communicated to project leads as outlined in the project plan
  • Works to balance all organization priorities with staff team

Logistics

  • Adds, updates, and deletes meetings on calendars in a timely manner
  • Communicates effectively and helps with coordination and scheduling of meetings, travel, and events
  • Perform regular updates of databases collecting information to meet project objectives
  • Maintain timely communication with project partners

Learning and Development

  • Develops knowledge of Network programming to seek out opportunities to promote our work
  • Builds then maintains knowledge of partners in the field to ensure we can represent key developments
  • Builds then maintains  knowledge of cancer, tobacco, and LGBTQIA+ health equity
  • Says apprised of public health news and impacts as appropriate
  • Maintains knowledge of state of the art communication channels, practices, and embraces further learning opportunities
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience
  • Relevant experience in communications is required
  • Demonstrates exemplary social media and communication skills
  • Demonstrates exemplary skills in publicly representing The Cancer Network
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Exemplary oral and written communication skills
  • Highly professional and capable of representing the organization to external constituents
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a growing team, manage details and meet established deadlines
  • At least minimal skills in computer systems and openness to additional training as needed to document work effectively
  • Experience working as part of a remote team

Compensation

The salary range for this position has been benchmarked in relation to the scope of the role, funding, and market rate. The salary will be $32,500 for the role at 0.5 FTE. Furthermore, this role will have a total compensation package with competitive benefits. Some of our benefits include:
