Job Description
Summary of Position
The City of Golden Valley is offering an onsite, paid Communications and Community Engagement Internship for emerging professionals to develop hands-on experience in storytelling, digital communication, and community engagement. As a member of the Administrative Services Department, the Communications and Community Engagement Intern will support the City’s communications and community engagement initiatives.
We are looking for a motivated, curious individual who brings energy, dedication, and a genuine interest in local government service. The Communications & Community Engagement Intern will work closely with a variety of city staff and community partners to engage in a wide range of projects and initiatives to advance the City’s goals.
This is a part-time position, with the ability to increase to full-time based on availability and workload. The expected start date is around mid-September.
Expected Hours of Work
Hours are typically Monday-Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm. In addition to working office hours, staff maybe required to work additional events, which may include nights or weekends. This temporary position is expected to last a minimum of 6 months with the ability to extend into 2027 based on budgets. Expectation is 20 to 40 hours per week on average, with the ability to accommodate coursework.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Writing stories, compiling content, and taking photographs for the City's newsletters, website, and social media accounts such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Nextdoor.
- Aiding in the creation of marketing and advertising materials.
- Assisting with City events and community engagement initiatives, including coordination, set-up, and attendance.
- Completing various administrative tasks as assigned, including scanning documents for digital archives and organizing filing systems.
- Completing other duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications
- Enrolled in, or graduated within the last 12 months, from a post-secondary degree focusing on communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, digital media, public administration, urban studies, or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with people to make progress on projects.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong writing ability and attention to detail in written materials preparation.
- General knowledge of, and interest in, digital communications, social media strategy, and community engagement practices.
- Ability to work effectively and tactfully with the public, supervisors, and coworkers.
- Interest in learning, storytelling, and communicating about local government and community initiatives.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Valid driver's license, or ability to arrange reliable transportation to be on site for the internship as well as attend offsite meetings and events.
- Ability to complete the essential duties and responsibilities of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Desired Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a graduate program related to communications, public administration, marketing, or a related field.
- Experience working with a City or other governmental agency.
- Six to twelve months of professional experience in a related field
- Experience with content creation for social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or Nextdoor.
- Experience with photography, videography, or basic photo/video editing.
- Experience with drafting newsletters, press releases, or marketing materials.
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere), Canva, or similar design tools.
- Experience with community engagement, event coordination, or public outreach.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
Work is conducted primarily indoors. Employees in this position aregenerally freefrom work hazards. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:
- Regularly read and interpret documents and other written material.
- Regularly communicate and exchange information with others in person, over the telephone, and using written communication methods.
- Frequently remain in a stationary position and regularly move within the building to attend meetings and access files and office machinery.
- Occasionally, traverse around the City to meetings or events.
- Regularly operate computers and other office equipment, such as a copy machine, printer, and telephone, as well as equipment/tools consistently found in municipal law.
- Occasionally move or transport items weighing up to 25 pounds.
