Job Summary

Media relations leadership for NEA, owning pitches, talking points, and rapid-response storytelling across TV, radio, streaming, and podcasts.

  • Media governance: build lists, craft pitches, coordinate interviews to secure earned coverage.
  • Storycraft: develop research-based talking points and collateral for immediate placements.
  • Monitoring and momentum: track coverage in real time, produce clips and reports, and steer amplification.

Job Description

Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain media lists; pitch and coordinate media at NEA.
  • Write and curate media collateral (press releases, op-eds, statements) and develop talking points for placements.
  • Manage daily media inquiries, interview requests, and real-time monitoring; determine engagement level and strategy.
  • Support relationships with media bookers and reporters; assist with high-profile media appearances.
  • Maintain calendar of key dates, events, and opportunities for NEA media strategy.
  • Monitor education and union industry trends; recommend strategic communications actions.
  • Develop compelling, research-based talking points to build narrative momentum.
  • Support pitching leadership and surrogates; draft pitches and manage logistics/research.
  • Proofread and copyedit media content using AP/NEA style.
  • Produce daily/weekly press clips and reports; monitor and analyze media results.
  • Ensure spokespeople hits are monitored in real-time and clips used in NEA content.
  • Support media trainings with leaders, members, and activists.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Four years of public relations experience with a focus on media pitching and writing for a range of outlets.
  • Experience implementing earned media strategies including social media tracking of stories and social media outreach.
  • Proven experience communicating with media outlets.
  • Excellent communication, planning, social media, and writing skills.
  • Willingness to work extended hours on evenings and weekends.
  • Samples of work products required at interview.
  • Frequent travel required.
Preferred
  • Existing relationships with broadcast reporters, producers, and bookers (Tier 2).
  • Experience using public relations and media monitoring software (e.g., Critical Mention, Cision).
