Community management is one of the easier ways into a marketing career, and one of the steepest ladders once you are in. In SalaryGuide’s US data, more than half of community professionals have 2 to 4 years of experience and a median total compensation of $70,000. Community leaders with 10 or more years of experience have a median of $195,000.

This guide explains what Community Managers do, the steps on the way up, what each step pays and the skills that move people from moderating conversations to leading a community strategy.

What does a Community Manager do?

A Community Manager builds and runs a space where customers, users or fans help each other and stay connected to a brand. That space might be a Discord server, a Slack group, a forum, a Reddit community, a set of in-person user groups or all of these.

Day to day, the work usually includes:

  • Moderation: setting community guidelines, enforcing them consistently and handling conflict fairly.
  • Programming: running events, ask-me-anything sessions, challenges, onboarding for new members and recognition for the most helpful ones.
  • Champion programs: recruiting and supporting volunteer leaders, moderators and ambassadors who extend the team’s reach.
  • Feedback loops: collecting product feedback, bug reports and feature requests and passing them to the right team in a usable form.
  • Measurement: tracking whether the community is healthy and useful, not just large.

The job looks different by type of community:

Type of communityTypical platformsWhat success looks like
Customer or user communityDiscourse, Khoros, Circle, SlackQuestions answered by peers, fewer support tickets, product adoption
Developer communityDiscord, GitHub Discussions, SlackContributions, integrations built, developers retained
Brand or fan communityDiscord, Reddit, Facebook GroupsEngagement, loyalty, word of mouth
Member or nonprofit communityCircle, Mighty Networks, in-person chaptersRenewals, volunteering, event attendance

How Community Managers are measured

A big member count does not prove a healthy community. Experienced teams track signals such as:

  • monthly active members and the share who post, answer or react;
  • time to first response for new questions;
  • the share of questions answered by other members rather than staff;
  • how many new members return after their first month;
  • product feedback collected and acted on;
  • support tickets avoided because the community answered first.

Being able to explain these numbers to a product or support leader is one of the clearest signs that someone is ready for a more senior role.

The Community Manager career path

Titles vary, but most community careers move through five stages:

  1. Community Associate or Moderator. Answers questions, enforces guidelines, welcomes new members and flags issues. Often part time or contract at first.
  2. Community Coordinator or Specialist. Runs regular programs, such as events and onboarding, and reports on activity.
  3. Community Manager. Owns the community plan, the champion program and the relationships with product, support and marketing.
  4. Senior Community Manager or Community Lead. Owns strategy across several spaces or regions, manages people and sets the measures leadership sees.
  5. Head or Director of Community. Builds the function, sets its budget and connects community to company goals such as retention, product adoption and revenue.

In developer-focused companies, the senior end of this path often merges with developer relations. In consumer brands, it can lead to social media, brand or customer experience leadership. For how community fits next to other marketing career ladders, see the marketing career path roadmap.

Two things stand out. First, more than half of all submissions sit in the 2 to 4 year band, which is why the overall median is modest. Second, pay accelerates after year 6. The median rises by $36,500 between the 4 to 6 and 6 to 8 year bands, and by $54,000 between the 8 to 10 year band and 10+ years. Those steps roughly match the moves from running a community to owning a strategy, and then to leading the function.

Remote community roles have a median of $82,500 (156 submissions) and hybrid roles $80,000 (209 submissions), while on-site roles come in at $70,000 (508 submissions). In-house and agency medians are almost identical, at $74,000 and $75,000.

Skills to build at each step

Early on: clear, kind writing; consistent moderation; quick, accurate answers; and a habit of noticing patterns in what members ask.

At manager level: program design, such as onboarding, events and champion programs; working with product and support teams; and reporting that connects community activity to outcomes those teams care about.

At senior level: strategy across several spaces, hiring and coaching moderators and managers, budget, and the ability to make the case for community to leadership in terms of retention, adoption or support costs.

Community Managers often work closely with social media teams, and the two careers overlap. The Social Media Manager career path is a useful comparison if you are deciding between them.

How to get your first Community Manager role

Community is one of the few marketing jobs where volunteer experience counts directly. To build evidence:

  • Moderate a real community. Many open-source projects, gaming groups and professional communities welcome volunteer moderators.
  • Run something. Organize an online event or a local meetup and record how many people came, what they said and what you would change.
  • Write a community health review. Pick a public community you know well and write a short review: what works, what members struggle with and three changes you would make.
  • Learn the platforms. Get comfortable administering Discord or Discourse, including roles, permissions and moderation tools.

Open community management jobs

As of October 14, 2026, SalaryGuide lists 2,124 open community management jobs in the US. Ads range from part-time moderator roles to head of community positions, so read the responsibilities and the reporting line before you compare the pay.

What hiring managers look for

Community hiring managers usually want to see how you handle people. Expect scenario questions about a heated thread, a member who breaks the rules repeatedly or a complaint that spreads across the community. For manager roles, they also want evidence that you can connect community work to business goals: a program you designed, what it changed and how you knew.
