Job Summary

Own Lean FRO's external storytelling and developer-facing content, shaping public presence, technical explainers, and engagement across channels; lead the editorial calendar, collaborate with engineers, and ensure accurate, accessible communication.

  • Define and lead content streams across channels and formats, highlighting features, results, and community work.
  • Produce and refine technical content from release notes to demonstrations while ensuring clarity and consistency.
  • Coordinate with engineers and leadership for reviews and sensitive responses to public discussions.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain our public presence. Manage Lean FRO’s presence on channels such as X, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Highlight new features, tools, research results, and community achievements. Maintain an editorial calendar, communicate important developments promptly, and use audience feedback and engagement to improve results. Identify emerging or underserved relevant channels and build presence where needed.
  • Create engaging technical content. Produce and edit short videos, written posts, simple illustrations, and screen-recorded demonstrations. Turn release notes, documentation, technical posts, and developer discussions into accessible explanations. Choose formats that explain the subject effectively and can be produced consistently.
  • Improve public understanding. Follow relevant public discussions and identify significant factual errors or gaps in understanding. Distinguish substantive criticism from misinformation, acknowledge genuine limitations, and prepare clear, evidence-based explanations. Exercise judgment about when engagement would help and when it would simply amplify a dispute.
  • Work closely with technical experts. Build relationships with developers and contributors and proactively identify stories. Use Lean’s documentation, release notes, and technical posts as the factual foundation for content. Seek expert review for new, uncertain, or sensitive technical claims, and work with technical leadership on sensitive responses. Own preparation, coordination, and publication.

Requirements

  • Hands-on content creation. You have personally produced and edited compelling short videos, clear written content, and simple visual explanations. You can explain complex ideas accurately and engagingly.
  • Technical curiosity and aptitude. You can learn complex technical material, ask useful questions, and recognize when a claim needs expert review.
  • Independent ownership. You identify promising stories, set priorities, maintain a publication schedule, and take content from idea to publication. You seek input when needed and own coordination and follow-through.
  • Sound judgment. You understand your audience, respond constructively to criticism, and make thoughtful decisions about what deserves public attention.
  • Collaboration. You work effectively with technical experts, incorporate feedback, and give contributors appropriate credit.

Preferred

  • (Optional) On-camera communication. You are comfortable presenting on camera and can explain technical ideas clearly and confidently.
  • Experience communicating about programming languages, mathematics, formal verification, software engineering, or AI; familiarity with open-source and developer communities; experience building an audience for a technical project; and advanced illustration, animation, or longer-form video production skills.

New types of organization are needed to accelerate scientific progress.Academic research groups and startup companies are essential to science and technology development. But there are some projects they just aren’t suited for. A university astronomy lab couldn’t have launched the Hubble Space Telescope on its own, nor would a venture-backed startup have built the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.Hubble and CERN illustrate a common pattern in science: a need for projects that are bigger than an academic lab can undertake, more coordinated than a loose consortium or themed department, and not directly profitable enough to be a venture-backed startup or industrial R&D project.Focused Research Organizations (FROs) are a new type of scientific institution designed to fill this gap.
