Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Graphic Design and Content Creation - Creates original visual media that communicates our mission and message in an engaging and unified way - Applies art, design, and copy layout skills to create visually engaging concepts such promotional and branding materials, communication media, and other print and digital materials; coordinates printing of materials with printing vendor - Chooses graphics, artwork, and behind-the-scenes photography/video, as appropriate; may enhance choices with simple design drawings - Prepares drafts of design work, and provides samples to administrative team for review; revises projects as necessary based on collaborative feedback process - Designs and develops material for routine newsletters and email campaigns; manages website updates and creates engaging posts for the website and/or social media - Promotes programs, events, and screenings through print advertisements, posters, social media, and other online sources; gathers and analyzes materials necessary to understand and determine the most effective communications techniques - Takes photos documenting workshops and events for LHS marketing initiatives - Coordinates and represents LHS at various tabling events Engagement - Designs LHS’s Annual Report - Supports design and communication needs for all fundraising events, including the annual Youth Film Festival - Support with donor related mailings as requested Vinegar Hill Theatre - Pre-Event: Attend initial rental meetings if/when needed; attend final site meeting with the renter, if applicable; assist Operations Director with recruiting and training new FOH assistants; confirm staffing needs for events and schedule contractors as needed; ensure concessions are fully stocked with candy, popcorn, ABC, and supplies; think creatively about new and fresh ideas for concessions, such as speciality cocktails, themed snacks, etc (within approved budget) - Day of Execution: Serve as the main point of contact for event/screening/rental/etc

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience; significant coursework or experience in Art, Graphic Design, or related preferred
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), or similar design software; comfortable using Apple computers
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and database utilization
  • Experience in website design and social media communications
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work on multiple, diverse projects to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and without close or constant supervision
  • Thrives in a dynamic workplace setting that offers creative autonomy balanced with a collaborative culture

Preferred

  • Filmmaking skills for creating behind-the-scenes videos is a bonus

Benefits

  • LHS employees are given ten (10) working days to be used for PTO and five (5) working days to be used for sick days.

Light House Studio was founded in 1999 by a group of local filmmakers, artists, and educators who began with a small pilot workshop, “Video Diary.” Since then we have helped youth create thousands of documentaries, dramas, and animated films. Our student work has been broadcast on PBS, CNN, IFC, and TNT. Work has been exhibited at the Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia, Second Street Gallery, and Live Arts, among others. Light House films have been shown in festivals all over the United States. Many of our students have received national awards for their films, including a Peabody Award, a Gold World Medal at the New York Festivals World’s Best TV & Films, and a CINE Golden Eagle Award.We have collaborated with many local nonprofits, including The International Rescue Committee; Children Youth and Family Services; Boys and Girls Club; The Music Resource Center; Live Arts; Second Street Gallery; The Virginia Film Festival; Public Housing Association of Residents; UNICEF’s Tap Project; Central Virginia Burn Camp; Big Brothers Big Sisters; the Shenandoah National Park Trust; as well as Ivy Creek School, Tandem Friends School, the Community Homeschool Enrichment Center, St. Anne’s-Belfield, and Walker Scholars. Light House is a member of Virginians for the Arts, the Virginia Production Alliance, The Center for Nonprofit Excellence, and The Alliance.We provide uncensored, mentored workshops in digital filmmaking and exhibition opportunities to young people, enabling them to learn, by hand, the pervasive language of motion pictures and sound. We challenge our students to be active participants in the media, and not simply passive consumers of the millions of images they see everyday.
