Job Summary

Own nonprofit institutional communications by shaping audience-ready messaging, media relations, and brand governance while leading a small team and budget to drive awareness and engagement.

  • Media relations and proactive press coverage: be the main point of contact and build relationships with outlets.
  • Strategy and execution: develop multi-channel messaging and ensure brand usage guides are followed across programs.
  • Operational leadership: supervise staff, manage budgets, and keep projects on schedule with stakeholder sign-off.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Lead institutional communications plan development and implementation.
  • Create messaging strategies for diverse offerings to reach targeted audiences.
  • Develop new communications leads and messaging.
  • Evaluate initiatives and adjust communications mix for effectiveness.
  • Serve as primary media contact to raise awareness of the organization’s mission, programs, and events.
  • Develop media relationships and maintain up-to-date media contacts.
  • Maintain data on markets to inform marketing plans.
  • Manage communications department budgets and oversee expenses.
  • Oversee all institutional communications projects with timelines and stakeholder approvals.
  • Write copy for ads, press releases, and institutional communications and provide editing support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, journalism, public relations or related field with 5+ years’ experience in a communications/marketing team.
  • Proven ability to lead a team and manage complex projects; direct experience leading a marketing or communications team preferred.
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit and arts communications trends.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to adapt writing to various formats and channels; collaborative and creative.
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, dependable, and able to prioritize multiple tasks on time and on budget in a cross-functional environment.

Preferred

  • Experience working in a museum or arts nonprofit environment.
  • Advanced degree or certifications in communications.
