Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Monitor local and national news, field calls and tips, listen to police and emergency scanners, and track developing stories through public records and court systems.
  • Communicate and coordinate with newsroom staff and sources as stories develop.
  • Write, edit, and publish content across digital platforms including KIRO7.com, the mobile app, OTT, social media channels, and push alerts.
  • Develop and execute SEO strategies that improve search visibility, audience growth, and long-term content performance.
  • Optimize headlines, story structure, metadata, and distribution plans using SEO and audience insights.
  • Use analytics platforms including Chartbeat, Tableau, Google Trends, and social analytics tools to inform content decisions and identify growth opportunities.
  • Ensure daily content production and audience engagement goals are met.
  • Stream breaking news, major coverage events, and live newscasts.
  • Exercise strong editorial judgment during breaking news and high-volume coverage situations.
  • Identify opportunities to grow reach, engagement, and referral traffic through search, social, and emerging platforms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Digital Media, Marketing, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Proven ability to manage breaking news and make sound editorial decisions in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, headline writing, and copy-editing skills.
  • Strong understanding of audience development, content optimization, digital content strategy, and engagement best practices.
  • Demonstrated expertise in SEO, analytics platforms, CMS workflows, live streaming, and social publishing tools.
  • Experience using audience data and performance metrics to shape editorial decisions and drive measurable growth.
  • Deep understanding of AP Style, media law, and ethical journalism standards.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as news demands; this is an essential on-site role.

Preferred

  • 3-5+ years of experience in a digital newsroom, audience development, or digital content strategy role.
  • Demonstrated success increasing website traffic, search rankings, audience engagement, or social growth through data-driven content decisions.
  • Experience managing SEO initiatives and developing strategies that improve organic search performance.
  • Experience coaching or leading newsroom staff on digital best practices, audience growth, and content optimization.
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics, Google Search Console, Google Trends, Chartbeat, Tableau, and other audience intelligence platforms.
  • Leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
