Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a platform-specific social media strategy aligned with the campaign’s message, priorities, and timeline through Election Day.
  • Create, schedule, and publish engaging content — copy, graphics, and short-form video — across Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, YouTube, Nextdoor, and other platforms as appropriate for local voters.
  • Build and maintain a content calendar coordinated with campaign milestones: forums, endorsements, mailers, canvass launches, ballot drop, and Election Day.
  • Cover campaign events (in person or via coordinated content capture) and turn them into timely posts.
  • Maintain a consistent candidate voice, visual identity, and message discipline across all channels.
  • Monitor accounts daily; respond to comments, messages, and mentions in a timely, on-message manner.
  • Grow local followership and engagement among Santa Barbara voters, neighborhood groups, and community organizations.
  • Identify and flag emerging issues, misinformation, or reputational risks for rapid response with the candidate and campaign team.
  • Plan and manage paid social campaigns targeted to district voters, including audience targeting, budgets, creative testing, and optimization.
  • Comply with platform political advertising requirements (advertiser verification, disclaimers) and applicable California/FPPC digital ad disclosure rules, in coordination with the campaign’s treasurer or compliance advisor.

Requirements

  • Prior hands-on experience managing social media for a political campaign (candidate or ballot measure); California campaign experience is ideal
  • Demonstrated ability to create high-performing content, including graphics and short-form video (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, or similar)
  • Experience with social media scheduling and management tools (e.g., Buffer, Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Later)
  • Working knowledge of social media analytics and reporting
  • Experience updating websites through a major CMS (e.g., WordPress, Squarespace, Webflow)
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with a sharp sense of tone, timing, and audience
  • Strong organizational skills; able to manage a multi-platform content calendar under campaign deadlines
  • Self-starter comfortable working independently in a remote environment, with responsiveness during key campaign moments
  • Sound judgment and discretion with sensitive campaign information

Preferred

  • Experience with California political campaigns, including familiarity with California/FPPC compliance and disclosure requirements
  • Experience supporting a successful local election campaign, including voter outreach, digital engagement, and campaign communications
  • Familiarity with Santa Barbara — its neighborhoods, local issues, media outlets, and community organizations
  • Experience running paid political/issue advertising on Meta and Google, including ad authorization and disclaimer requirements
  • Email marketing platform experience (Mailchimp, Constant Contact, or similar) for supporter newsletters
