Job Description

Company Description

Moonwake Collaborative is a growing virtual assistant and digital marketing agency that supports small businesses with marketing, design, strategy, and operational support. We are looking to add a contract Web Developer / Website Builder to our team.

This role is ideal for someone who can confidently handle the technical side of website development while also having a strong enough design eye to build polished, strategic, template-based websites. We already have a designer on our team, so this is not a pure brand design role, but the right person should still be able to create clean, modern, user-friendly websites that look professional and function well.

Position Overview

We are seeking a dependable and detail-oriented contractor who can build and maintain websites for a variety of small business clients. Some projects may involve working with the designer to implement custom branded designs while others may require building out high-quality websites using templates and established visual direction.

The ideal candidate is both technically capable and visually thoughtful. They should be comfortable making design decisions within a template-based framework, implementing responsive websites, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with our internal team to bring client projects to life.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Art Director to transform Figma/Sketch designs into pixel-perfect, responsive web experiences.
  • Customize website templates so they feel polished, strategic, and aligned with the client’s brand
  • Create websites and interfaces using standard HTML/CSS practices, and incorporate data from back-end databases and services
  • Handle front-end website development and light to moderate code customization
  • Implement mobile-responsive, user-friendly website layouts
  • Make website updates & edits requested by clients, develop plans for completing larger projects, and suggest solutions to improve existing website.
  • Provide ongoing maintenance to clients to opt in to that service
  • Troubleshoot website issues, bugs, formatting errors, and plugin conflicts
  • Optimize websites for performance, functionality, and basic SEO best practices
  • Collaborate with Moonwake’s internal team, including project management, strategy, copy, and design
  • Follow project timelines and communicate clearly about progress, roadblocks, and needs
  • Apply a strong visual eye when building within templates, even when full custom design is not required
  • Meet regularly with stakeholders and managers to review business and functional requirements and to determine project scopes and specifications
  • Ensure websites are clean, functional, professional, and easy for clients to navigate
  • Perform UI design and coding and create reusable objects and wireframes for web pages and email templates
  • Conduct file backups regularly to local directories

Qualifications

  • Proven Experience in planning and developing websites across multiple products and organizations
  • Dedication to innovative, sophisticated designs and collaborative problem-solving
  • Extensive knowledge of web applications, programming languages, and web services — including API, CSS, CSS3, cross-browser compatibility, HTML, HTML5, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, security principles, REST, SOAP, and web user interface design
  • Strong working knowledge of multiple website platforms, including Wix, Squarespace, Showit, WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, and other template-based builders.
  • Strong understanding of user experience, layout, spacing, and visual hierarchy
  • Strong front-end development skills and comfort with code customization when needed
  • Ability to work within templates while still creating a site that feels custom, intentional, and on brand
  • Experience with responsive design across desktop, tablet, and mobile
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical issues independently
  • Comfortable collaborating with a remote team and taking direction when needed
  • Strong time management and ability to meet deadlines
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable being client-facing and representing Moonwake

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with platforms such as WordPress, Squarespace, Showit, Wix, Shopify, or Webflow
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Familiarity with SEO fundamentals and website optimization
  • Experience integrating forms, schedulers, email platforms, and third-party tools
  • Experience supporting multiple clients or agency-style work
  • Ability to work from brand guidelines, mockups, or creative direction provided by another team member

What We’re Looking For

The right fit for Moonwake is someone who is:

  • Technically skilled
  • Visually aware
  • Self-directed and reliable
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced agency environment
  • Flexible and collaborative
  • Professional in client-facing or team-facing communication
  • Able to balance both functionality and aesthetics

Position Details

  • Contract position
  • Starting at $45-50/hour
  • Fully remote
  • Flexible workload based on project needs
  • Opportunity for ongoing work as client needs grow
