Social Studies Projects is a progressive design practice based in Los Angeles, founded in the belief that historically grounded, one-of-a-kind spaces can transform the way we live. We work across a variety of scales, from renovations, additions and new-build construction to full service interior design, custom furniture, design consulting, media, and objects.
SSP is seeking a Project Architect to lead the architectural direction of our residential and commercial projects, with demonstrated experience working across all phases from concept to completion. This role is ideal for someone with a strong design sensibility, technical expertise, and a collaborative spirit. As a leading member of the team, you will work across multiple projects within the studio, mentor junior designers, and contribute to our multidisciplinary studio’s culture of curiosity and critical thinking.
Key Responsibilities

Projects:

Lead the design and development of architectural projects from initial conception through construction

Manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables while maintaining design integrity

Oversee and directly contribute to the development and production of comprehensive architectural drawing sets and documentation, ensuring technical accuracy and that projects meet all zoning, building, and regulatory requirements

Actively manage the construction administration phase, including site visits, responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and coordinating with contractors to ensure built work accurately reflects SSP’s design intent and quality standards

Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, modeling clear and professional communication

Coordinate effectively with our network of consultants to ensure successful project delivery

Practice:

• Contribute to the continuous improvement of SSP’s architectural graphic standards, technical detail library, and documentation systems for design work
• Maintain and expand knowledge of relevant building codes, zoning regulations, HPOZ approvals, HOA approvals, and permitting processes at city, regional, and/or county levels, serving as a key resource for the team
• Implement and uphold quality control processes for all architectural deliverables, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and alignment with SSP’s design ethos and technical standards
• Manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
• Stay informed of new materials and methodologies and integrate them thoughtfully into relevant projects
• Studio:
• Mentor and guide junior design team members, fostering a culture of learning, professional growth, and shared knowledge within the studio
• Contribute to SSP’s studio culture and participate in internal discussions and activities that enrich our creative environment
• Collaborate with the Principal on strategic initiatives, including contributing to proposals, presentations, and business development efforts that align with the studio’s goals for growth
• Work closely and effectively with all team members, understanding our shared purpose, project objectives, and studio values
• Foster positive and productive relationships with clients, contractors, fabricators, artists, and other external partners
• Communicate effectively, promptly, appropriately, and respectfully with all collaborators, both remotely and in person
• Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and cooperative working environment, where ideas can be shared freely, and challenges are approached collectively

Qualifications

• Must be authorized to work in the United States to be considered for this position.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in practice. Experience in residential projects is beneficial, but not required.
• Master of Architecture (M.Arch) preferred, B.Arch degree required.
• Licensed Architect or actively working towards licensure.
• Highly developed skills in managing client communication, project scheduling, consultant coordination, and construction administration.
• Demonstrated experience and success with managing project permitting, HPOZ approvals, and HOA approvals at the city, regional, and/or county level.
• Advanced knowledge of technical detailing, fabrication techniques, and construction processes.
• Exceptional organizational skills with acute attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to adapt to change within an evolving and growing environment.
• Familiarity with Los Angeles architecture and design industry, with knowledge of California zoning and code regulations.
• This position requires regular travel between work locations during the workday. Employees must have reliable transportation that enables them to perform this essential function. If operating a motor vehicle, the employee must maintain a valid driver's license.
• Comprehensive knowledge of software, including but not limited to: Revit, Enscape, Monograph, Rhino, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Drive (Gmail, Docs, Sheets), Bluebeam, Slack
  

Work Schedule

• 40 hours per week between the hours of Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM in person, with every other Friday remote following 30 days of employment and manager approval
  

Physical Requirements

• Work Environment: Primarily indoor office/studio setting; occasional off-site work for presentations or site visits.
• Physical Activities: Frequent sitting and computer use for extended periods. Occasional standing, walking, bending, and lifting (up to 25 lbs). Occasional reaching or climbing (e.g., to install presentation boards or displays).
