Job Description
Squared Communications specializes in strategic communications, public relations, marketing, media, government, and political campaigns. Our clients include news organizations, foundations, Fortune 500 companies, and trade associations that have a daily media presence across multiple industries, including technology, climate and sustainability, and retail. The Press Secretary/Senior Account Executive for Squared Communications will work with the principal and across teams to represent the firm’s clients to local and national media. Daily responsibilities will include pitching stories, writing press releases, developing talking points, and monitoring a variety of news sources, including traditional and new media, such as print, social media, television, podcasts and radio. Relying on and cultivating personal relationships with reporters and tracking news cycles will be core functions of the Press Secretary/Account Executive’s job. Supporting rapid response efforts and crisis communication plans will be required as needed. This position is based in Washington, DC, and applicants must work out of the D.C. office at least three days a week. Responsibilities include: Lead day-to-day management of client accounts, setting strategic priorities, and ensuring seamless execution of press, rapid response, and media monitoring efforts. Build integrated communication plans (audiences, key messages, channel strategy, cadence, and success metrics) for priority initiatives. Translate complex strategic priorities into clear narrative arcs, campaigns, and audience-tailored content (e.g., leader messages, feature stories, toolkits, explainers). Advise senior leadership on communication strategy, narrative positioning, and executive-ready messaging. Draft press releases, talking points, op-eds, blogs, social media posts, and statements. Prep and staff client representatives for press interviews. Develop individualized press contacts and lists for clients, while maintaining strong relationships with journalists and members of the media. Support the company’s media training practice. Pitch new client data, initiatives, and spokespeople to gain earned media coverage. Proactive outreach to reporters for on and off-the-record communications. Provide strategic recommendations for news outlets or other media as requested. Support, staff, and prepare on the ground client events. Qualifications: 5-7 years in public relations, media, trade association, government or campaign-related experience. Prior on-the-record experience is a plus. Experience with staffing a principal and media prep preferred. Strong writing, editing, and public speaking skills. Attention to detail with the ability to handle multiple accounts at once, work efficiently and meet deadlines. Deep knowledge of and interest in current events and U.S politics. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Exceptional strategic thinking capabilities with the ability to translate complex issues into clear, compelling narratives for diverse audiences Proactive approach to staying informed on relevant industry news, trends, and developments.
