Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Principal Investigators, researchers, and communications colleagues to develop clear and compelling stories about quantum information science.
  • Write, edit, and produce content for news media, scientific audiences, employees, government stakeholders, and the public.
  • Develop communications products including science stories, social media content, presentations, reports, white papers, leadership messages, and stakeholder materials.
  • Translate complex scientific and technical concepts—including quantum computing hardware and software advances—into accurate, audience-appropriate communications.
  • Coordinate with Berkeley Lab communications teams, DOE stakeholders, QSA partner institutions, vendors, and creative services to deliver communications projects from concept through publication.
  • Manage multiple communications assignments while applying Berkeley Lab policies, editorial standards, and sound professional judgment.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, corporate communications, English, or a technical/related field or equivalent work experience and a minimum of 2 years of related experience.
  • Strong science writing, editing, proofreading, interviewing, story research and concept development skills for clearly communicating complex scientific/technical accomplishments and quantum computing hardware and software innovations to a range of audiences.
  • Experience communicating science through social media and multi-media technologies.
  • Experience interacting with high-level internal and external contacts to establish working relationships needed to produce publications for release.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, teamwork, collaboration and client service skills, with demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with a diverse group of colleagues.
  • Proven ability to be a creative and critical thinker and problem-solver.
  • Demonstrated organizational and project-management skills, including the ability to prioritize multiple assignments, coordinate reviews, and meet competing deadlines.
  • Proficient with both print and electronic publishing technologies such as web publishing software, content management systems, and digital communications practices.
  • Ability to work on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with Overleaf/LaTeX highly desirable.
