We are seeking a highly skilled and thoughtful Staff Motion Designer to join our Design Innovation team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for defining and evolving Pinterest’s motion design language, ensuring clarity, coherence, and delight across the platform’s surfaces and flagship features. This is a hands-on, cross-functional position that requires a rare blend of motion craft expertise, systems thinking, and design technology proficiency. You will establish reusable motion principles, patterns, tokens, and implementation guidelines within our design system, collaborating directly with product and engineering teams to solve complex interaction challenges. Your work will influence everything from detailed interactions to the overall cohesiveness of Pinterest’s user experience, elevating the quality and consistency of our product’s motion language. The ideal candidate will have a passion for pushing the boundaries of motion design, leveraging AI-enabled tools, and mentoring others to achieve excellence in motion craftsmanship.

Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience in motion design, product design, interaction design, or a closely related discipline.
- A portfolio demonstrating exceptional motion craft in shipped digital products or platforms.
- Experience influencing cross-functional teams and shaping product or design system directions at a senior or principal level.
- Deep understanding of motion and interaction design principles, including timing, choreography, easing, spring behavior, feedback, and transitions.
- Proven experience creating or evolving scalable motion systems such as principles, token sets, pattern libraries, and documentation.
- Practical fluency in partnering with engineers to implement complex motion, considering performance, platform conventions, accessibility, and quality assurance.
- Proficiency with prototyping tools, AI, and coding workflows to explore ideas and improve design and development processes.
- Strong product and systems thinking, with the ability to connect craft decisions to user needs, product strategy, and measurable impact.
- Excellent communication, storytelling, and facilitation skills to align diverse stakeholders and articulate design rationale.
- Bachelor’s degree in design, animation, human-computer interaction, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Define and continuously evolve Pinterest’s motion design language, including principles, interaction patterns, timing, tokens, and specifications to ensure consistency and accessibility across the platform.
- Lead motion direction for flagship and AI-forward experiences, utilizing motion to clarify system states, cause and effect, hierarchy, feedback, and responsiveness.
- Collaborate horizontally with product designers, engineers, product managers, researchers, and content teams to align motion strategies with overall product goals and enhance user experience quality.
- Transform high-level explorations into scalable contributions to the design system, reducing ad hoc implementation and improving consistency across teams.
- >li>Rapidly prototype and validate motion ideas using various mediums such as motion studies, design tools, code, AI-enabled tools, or custom prototypes to facilitate shared understanding and decision-making.
- Work closely with engineering teams during implementation to address technically complex animation challenges, balancing performance, platform conventions, accessibility, and maintainability.
- Develop or enable lightweight tools, templates, and workflows that allow designers to explore motion concepts quickly and assist engineers in building sophisticated animations reliably.
- Stay at the forefront of AI-enabled motion and visual-creation tools, applying them strategically to improve ideation, prototyping, and production workflows while maintaining quality standards.
- Conduct motion quality reviews, provide actionable feedback, and mentor team members on motion principles, systems thinking, and collaboration best practices.
- Communicate the rationale, tradeoffs, and user impact of motion decisions to teams, leadership, and stakeholders to foster alignment and high standards for motion craft.
