Job Description

Location: Hybrid ~ Remote with occasional on-site support required (Summit, NJ + surrounding counties) 

Start: Immediate  

Hours: Part-time, 10–15 hours/week  

Pay: $20/hour (contract role)  

Growth: This role may evolve into more weekly hours and advancement opportunities as the organization grows.

Center for the Heart is a mission-driven nonprofit focused on end-of-life, grief and caregiver support, as well as end-of-life and grief literacy. Our communications must be consistent, ethical, compassionate and professional. We serve individuals and families nationwide through virtual programming while maintaining a strong local footprint in NJ/NY through events, partnerships, local program offerings and community engagement.  

Role Summary  

Center for the Heart is seeking a highly reliable Marketing & Communications Specialist who can jump in immediately to support fast-moving campaigns, events and community initiatives while supporting an organization-wide marketing overhaul.  

This role is ideal for someone who:  

  • Moves quickly without sacrificing quality  
  • Can shift priorities multiple times a week  
  • Communicates clearly and follows through  
  • Can support both digital marketing and in-person event needs  
  • Can improvise and take initiative without step-by-step instructions YET is able to correctly and precisely follow step-by-step SOPs and instructions when given 

You will work closely with the Head Marketing & Communications Strategist, a Marketing & Communication Strategy Consultant and internal leadership. 

Key Responsibilities  

1) Social Media & Content Production  

  • Create high-quality social media content (graphics, carousels, short videos and reels)  
  • Draft, schedule and publish content across Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn  
  • Manage basic analytics via Meta Business Suite  
  • Track basic performance metrics and report highlights  

2) Website Updates (CMS + SEO)  

  • Make updates in the website CMS (Squarespace) including:  copy edits;  layout adjustments;   blog uploads; event postings  
  • Apply SEO best practices:  meta titles and descriptions ; alt text;  categories and tags;  internal linking support  
  • Support the ongoing SEO overhaul and optimization by being able to follow established SOPs 

3) Email Marketing & Fundraising Support  

  • Assist with email marketing via Brevo 
  • Support Givebutter and PayPal campaigns and communications  
  • Help with newsletters, event reminders and donor communications 
  • Help with building and modifying automated email flows  
  • Support segmentation and list hygiene tasks as assigned  

4) Presentations & Materials  

  • Build polished presentations and formatted documents for leadership, partners and events  
  • Create flyers, one-pagers and event collateral in Canva  
  • Support print prep and file formatting as needed  

5) Video Editing & Packaging 

  • Edit short-form video content using basic video editing tools  
  • Create videos for campaigns, event promotion and community engagement  
  • Support uploading and organizing video collateral for future reuse  

6) Project Support & Operations  

  • Support content calendars, trackers and project timelines  
  • Respond promptly in team communications  
  • Maintain strong follow-through across multiple deliverables  
  • Seamlessly transition between projects as priorities shift  

7) In-Person Event Support (Local)  

Assist with local events in Summit NJ and surrounding counties like Union County, Essex County, Middlesex County, and Morris County. This includes:  

  • setup support  
  • printed materials  
  • signage and handouts  
  • content capture (photos and video, when appropriate)  

Required Skills & Experience  

  • Strong Canva experience (templates, social content and brand consistency)  
  • Strong social media experience: Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn  
  • Meta Business Suite experience (basic analytics)  
  • Experience using social media schedulers (Later or similar, as well as Meta Business Suite) 
  • Comfortable producing short-form video using basic editing tools  
  • Microsoft experience (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)  
  • Familiarity with SharePoint or similar file management systems  
  • Email marketing experience in Brevo or similar platforms  
  • Givebutter experience is a plus; willingness to learn required  
  • CMS experience required (Squarespace or similar)  
  • Ability to apply basic SEO practices (meta, alt text, formatting and internal linking)  
  • Experience working in fast-moving environments where priorities and projects change regularly  

Strongly Preferred  

  • Nonprofit and/or startup experience  
  • Salesforce experience (or similar CRM)  
  • Experience supporting integrations or automations  
  • Familiarity with conversion-driven marketing (lead capture, funnels and event registration optimization)  
  • Comfort supporting local SEO work (Google Business Profile updates and local directories, following analytics on BrightLocal or similar)
