Job Summary

Own the integrated communications and marketing strategy for IEI, guiding brand narrative, audience segmentation, and multi-channel execution while leading a cross-functional team and coordinating with university partners and stakeholders.

  • Own: strategy and execution across brand, digital, media relations, and executive communications.
  • Audience & channels: multi-sector audiences including university partners, policymakers, philanthropists, and the public.
  • Team & impact: lead the communications and marketing team, align with IEI priorities, and manage budget and agency/vendor relations.

Job Description

  • The Director of Communications and Marketing, a senior-level position reporting to the Director for the Institute for Emerging Issues, leads the development and implementation of an integrated, multi-faceted communications and marketing strategy designed to strengthen the organization’s brand, elevate its impact and advance IEI as an authoritative voice in addressing emerging issues critical to North Carolina’s economic vibrancy.
  • This role will shape how the Institute communicates its mission, values, and insights to multi-sector audiences, including NCSU and community partners, philanthropic leaders, key decision makers and the public.
  • The Director of Communications and Marketing will manage the communications and marketing team and work collaboratively with individuals and various organizations, the University and IEI’s partners throughout North Carolina.
  • Other Responsibilities: Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
  • Five or more years of public affairs/relations experience in government, nonprofit, and/or higher education sectors.
  • Ability to independently prioritize and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Demonstrated success in managing, supporting, and motivating staff.
  • Ability to maintain an upbeat, positive attitude under tight deadlines and to prioritize and enforce deadlines diplomatically.
  • Experience in public policy/advocacy communications.
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Experience in executive communications, including drafting messaging on behalf of leadership and refining high-level messaging
  • Demonstrated ability in managing a budget.
  • Creative and strategic application of digital and social media technologies.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in journalism, public relations, marketing, or related field. (All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.)
  • Experience in strategic marketing communications, public relations, and/or media relations.
  • Knowledge of issues relating to North Carolina
  • Experience working with external vendors, such as photographers and videographers
