The State Library of Kansas houses government, legislative and historical records. The State Library is a state agency housed on the third floor of the Capitol building's north wing. In addition to the documents held in the State Library's collection, the location provides space for patrons to read, make copies or use one of the public computers on the west side.

The State Library also maintains digital databases for state agencies and research and historical databases for the general public. Digital collections also include eBooks, audiobooks, and online resources for Kansans. The State Library also oversees the Talking Books program, which provides support and specialized materials to eligible Kansans.

Compensation:

• Salary Range: $29.00 - $31.22/hr

Note: Salary can vary depending upon education, experience, or qualifications.

Position Summary & Responsibilities:

• Administers the agency’s website content management system, social media accounts, press release system, and other communications channels. Administration includes serving as the primary contact with communication channel vendors, controlling access credentials, providing staff training, resolving staff inquiries, leading refreshes/migrations, coordination with external entities on events and processes (ex. proclamations), and monitoring channels to ensure communications meet agency standards.
• Research, writes, designs, updates, develops, presents, and/or publishes content using the agency’s various communications channels. Some tasks associated with agency-wide initiatives will be assigned by the State Librarian, while others will be requested by other agency administrators. Serves on the continuity of operations planning committee and coordinates communications in emergency situations to help ensure the continuity of agency operations.
• Plans, organizes, and directs an extensive public campaign; develops and oversees policies and procedures governing public relations and media contacts; monitors successful communications strategies and initiatives of other state libraries, libraries within the state, and organizations to utilize in their own work; formulates budget proposals for public campaigns; and evaluates communications for effectiveness.
• Confers, in writing or orally, with civil organizations, state government entities, and communications media to establish and maintain liaison, answer inquiries and explain and interpret agency programs and services.
• Coordinates and contributes to agency initiatives and projects as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned in support of the agency.

Minimum Qualifications

• Three or more years of experience in communications, public relations, marketing, or similar role for an organization. Must be able to demonstrate experience developing publications, advertising, and other promotional materials. Should have experience developing a communications network.
• Experience working with various forms of media.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience advocating for a non-profit organization.

Special Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Strong verbal and written communication skills to deliver the agency’s message.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively with effective interpersonal skills.
• Proficient computer skills associated with website development and Microsoft Office applications.
• Knowledge of video and graphic software might be helpful, but not required.
