Commercial Lines - New Business, Placement, and Marketing Manager
USA (Remote)
Posted 4 months ago
Job Description
Company
Switchboard is building a new type of commercial insurance brokerage to help America's small businesses get to work and keep working.
We're building a full digital brokerage stack end to end, with humans and AI agents working together, so a small business owner gets the same quality of advice, service, and choice that a billion-dollar company gets.
We're a growing team with the goal of building a generational financial services company that becomes the permanent foundation of how the small-business economy works.
The Role
This role is unlike any other in commercial lines.
We're hiring an experienced commercial P&C insurance expert to own small-business account placement from intake to quoting, binding, and early service across admitted and non-admitted markets, supported by our internal software platform.
Your day to day will be talking to new clients that want your help to understand their needs and find them great quotes for their business, across all lines and verticals.
100% of our customers come through our proprietary inbound customer acquisition engine. There is no sourcing or outbound production activity.
We’ve built our technology to remove repetitive brokerage work, so you can focus on what you do best: talking to customers, understanding risk, and advising them on options.
This is a fit for a commercial lines account manager with strong marketing/placement experience, a new business placement specialist, a wholesale broker, a former underwriter, or a hands-on producer who likes the technical work of getting accounts placed and talking to clients.
You'll work directly with the founders and our founding brokerage and account management team. This is a senior operating role for someone who can run accounts independently, move quickly, and help define how the next version of small-business brokerage should work.
The Team
- CEO is a serial founder with 20 years in marketing, sales distribution, and go-to-market engineering
- CTO was a founding engineer at a financial services startup that has raised $100M+
- Founding brokerage team comes from Amwins/Gallagher/Marsh etc
- This is the founding team's second startup together
Responsibilities
- Own new commercial insurance opportunities from first intake, including gathering underwriting information, identifying missing details, and keeping the account moving through our internal software workflows
- Speak directly with business owners to understand their operations, exposures, coverage needs, deadlines, and buying context
- Decide which markets should see each account based on appetite, coverage fit, pricing, timing, and carrier workflow
- Prepare submissions and applications, quote and rate accounts in, and follow up with underwriters inside of our software platform
- Review quotes for coverage, exclusions, pricing, subjectivities, and bind requirements, then turn options into clear recommendations for the client
- Present quotes and coverage tradeoffs to clients, answer questions, and help move the account to a bindable decision
- Bind coverage, coordinate payment and onboarding steps, and make sure policy documents, binders, certificates, and next actions are handled cleanly
- Support early account servicing if needed, including endorsements, billing questions, certificates, audits, policy follow-up, and handoffs
- Work with the product and engineering team to improve the AI-assisted workflows that reduce low-value work across intake, quoting, binding, and servicing
Requirements
- Active Property & Casualty license
- 5+ years of commercial lines P&C experience
- Hands-on experience quoting, rating, submitting, negotiating, and binding commercial accounts through carrier portals, wholesalers, MGAs, MGUs, and comparative raters
- Strong working knowledge of small commercial coverages such as general liability, BOP/package, workers compensation, commercial auto, property, umbrella/excess, professional liability, cyber, and related lines, across a broad mix of businesses such as contractors, transportation/trucking, retail, beauty, and similar categories
- Practical underwriting judgment: you know what carriers need, when a submission is incomplete, where a risk is likely to fit, and how to mix and match coverages
- Background in one or more of the following: commercial lines account management with placement responsibility, new business marketing/placement, wholesale brokerage, carrier underwriting, MGA/MGU underwriting, or hands-on commercial production
- Comfortable talking to clients by phone and email, explaining coverage clearly, and asking direct questions to get the information needed to quote and bind
- Able to manage multiple active accounts, deadlines, underwriter follow-ups, and client conversations without constant direction
- Comfortable working remotely, using modern software tools, staying organized, and managing work independently in a fast-moving environment where the process is still being built
Nice to Haves
- Experience improving brokerage workflows, intake questions, carrier notes, templates, or placement processes
- Experience working with modern AI tools
- Bachelor's degree from 4-year university
Location & Benefits
- 100% Remote (we do have an office in NYC but this role is fully remote)
- Medical, dental, and vision
- 401K
- 20 PTO days
- $80k-$120k + performance incentive
Interview Process
- 30 minute intro conversation
- Insurance knowledge and placement expertise evaluation
- Reference check
