Job Summary

Own the content and digital strategy for the US Drought Portal, balancing cross-agency web delivery, audience-facing storytelling, and accessible, 508-compliant materials while driving ongoing UX research and cross-team coordination.

  • Content & Digital Strategy: Own multi-year portal planning, content creation, and file type guidelines to keep drought.gov current and understandable for broad audiences.
  • Digital Communications & Accessibility: Lead social and channel support, ensure 508 compliance, and translate technical data into visuals and narratives.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Drought.gov Content Coordination and Digital Strategy (60%): Coordinate web development, content planning, and execution for the U.S. Drought Portal with the web development team, NIDIS coworkers, and partners, including review practices.
  • Lead strategic annual and multi-year planning for the U.S. Drought Portal; provide recommendations to NIDIS leadership for future development.
  • Act as point of contact for NIDIS’s relationship with the web development team at NOAA’s NCEI; inform priorities for yearly work.
  • Create, prioritize, edit, and update written and visual material on drought.gov; summarize technical information for broad audiences.
  • NIDIS Digital Communications Support (25%): Support content development for NIDIS social media accounts and other channels; engage audiences and attract new ones.
  • Contribute to implementation of NIDIS communications strategy in coordination with the NIDIS Communications Team.
  • Ensure digital communications and documents are accessible and compliant with Section 508.
  • Research data formats, content, and visualization methods for communication materials.
  • Drought.gov Performance Monitoring and User Research (12%): Monitor web and social media traffic to identify opportunities to increase engagement.
  • Advance UX research and testing; collaborate with UNC Asheville’s NEMAC to guide priorities for user research and implement lessons learned.

Requirements

  • B.A. or B.S. in a related degree such as Journalism, Communications, Marketing, English, Technical or Scientific Writing, Information Management, Digital Media, Multimedia or Visual Arts, User Experience Design, Science (Environmental, Earth, or Atmospheric Sciences), or similar.
  • At least five years of professional experience guiding website content strategy and development.
  • High proficiency with Google Apps (e.g., Google Analytics), Microsoft Office Suite, and SEO tools; ability to report on analytics to drive results.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to edit others’ writing to plain language.
  • Ability to translate technical information into understandable narrative and visuals (infographics, charts, story maps, etc.).
  • Attention to detail and accuracy; strong organizational skills; ability to work independently and with multiple partners; support a respectful work culture.

Preferred

  • One or more years of professional experience updating website content using a web content management system (CMS); Drupal experience preferred.
  • Background in scientific or research-based writing.
  • Experience in modern web content delivery across multiple platforms (phone, tablet, desktop).
  • Experience using markdown or HTML/CSS.
  • Experience in web accessibility and governmental compliance (Section 508).
  • Experience managing web-based projects, including timelines and progress tracking.
  • Experience developing effective social media communications.
  • Experience using Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems for communications.
  • Experience innovating and capitalizing on digital communication trends within an overall strategy.
  • Professional graphic design, videography, or photography experience.
