Job Description
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute integrated communications strategies for active legislative, organizing, electoral, and coalition campaigns.
- Create campaign-specific messaging frameworks, talking points, fact sheets, and one-pagers that support staff, volunteer leaders, and spokespeople—often in fast-paced, high-stakes situations such as the legislative session, organization-wide actions/campaigns, and during elections.
- Partner with the Director of Movement Building, Regional Organizing Manager, and Policy Advisors to ensure communications are aligned with campaign strategy and base-building goals.
- Narrative development and storytelling strategy that centers mamas, caregivers, and the communities most impacted by our issues.
- Conduct interviews, gather stories, and develop content (written, video, audio) that lifts up volunteer leaders and member experiences.
- Ensure member voices are meaningfully integrated into campaign communications, press engagement, and public-facing content.
- Develop and maintain a campaign messaging calendar that aligns with organizing milestones, legislative deadlines, and electoral opportunities — including communications for The Mother PAC's endorsement and electoral work.
- Manage day-to-day digital communications — including social media, email, and website content creation — ensuring consistent voice and alignment with campaign priorities.
- Design and produce visual content for digital channels — including campaign graphics, social media visuals, email assets, and short-form multimedia — primarily using Canva, with support from external designers, photographers, or videographers for more complex projects. Ensure all content centers the voices of volunteer leaders and impacted communities.
- Partner with the Regional Organizing Manager to develop and execute digital organizing strategies that drive action, including supporter recruitment, event promotion, and call-to-action campaigns.
Requirements
- 2-3+ years of professional communications experience in advocacy, political, or movement-based organizations.
- Background in campaign communications, including messaging development, content creation, and rapid response.
- Experience developing messaging that centers the voices of impacted communities and advances racial, gender, and economic justice.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to write quickly, clearly, and persuasively under deadline pressure.
- Experience managing digital communications, including social media, email, and website content.
- Design skills with hands-on experience using Canva to create campaign graphics, social media visuals, and other digital assets. Must be comfortable producing visual content independently without always relying on external designers.
- Strong project management skills and the ability to juggle multiple campaigns and deadlines simultaneously.
- Commitment to FAFO's mission and an understanding of the barriers mothers, caregivers, and women of color face; understanding of how communications work connects to organizing, base-building, and campaign strategy.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively within a racially and culturally diverse team environment.
- Be confident, friendly, professional, resourceful, and helpful in working with staff, members, media, and partners.
Preferred
- Experience with more advanced design programs such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
- Video production or multimedia storytelling skills.
- Experience working with volunteers, volunteer leaders, or community members in storytelling and narrative development.
- Experience with media relations, including pitching, press release writing, and spokesperson preparation. Familiarity with the Oregon media landscape and political context.
- Experience with paid media, digital advertising, or marketing.
- Fluency in Spanish.
- Familiarity with EveryAction, Hustle, or other organizing/communications platforms.
Benefits
- A generous Paid Time Off policy
- Paid holidays.
- Paid sabbatical after 6 years of employment.
- Fully subsidized employee health, dental, and vision insurance premiums plus a significant contribution to dependents’ premiums.
- Potential federal student loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
- Access to a retirement savings plan.
- Access to a Flexible Spending Account.
- Professional development and other learning opportunities.
- A working environment that is collaborative and supportive where we value coming to work as full people. We practice supporting all staff in balancing work and our rich personal lives. We value having an inclusive and family-friendly work environment.
