Job Description
Department of Recreation, Parks and Open Space/Division of Athletics & Recreational Sports Internal recruitment, applications are only being accpeted from current City of Norfolk employees.
Permanent Part-time, 35 hours per week.
Assists in planning, implementing, administering and evaluating athletic leagues, tournaments and special events.
Work location: Lakewood Athletic Office, 1612 Willow Wood Drive, Norfolk, VA 23509
Work hours: Hours are schedules 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Saturday; 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Sunday; Flexible hours required.
Essential Functions
- Plans and administers athletic leagues, tournaments and special events.
- Manages daily programs, athletic sites and facilities.
- Organizes divisions of play for regular and post season games; establishes and prepares schedules.
- Monitors budget expenditures; assists with the budget preparation and makes recommendations by estimating materials and supplies required for programs and special projects.
- Evaluates programs and makes recommendations for enhancements.
- Researches and writes grant applications; solicits sponsorships.
- Prepares a variety of daily, weekly and monthly reports; completes incident and accident reports.
- Operates a computer and must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook).
- Supervises and guides part-time staff, volunteers, youth and adult league participants as necessary; resolves personnel and program issues; may participate in interview processes.
- Operates and manages park shelter reservations for four (4) major parks; operates field marking machines and blowers.
- Prepares fields for game day activities and performs field maintenance.
- Must possess thorough knowledge of Virginia High School League rules.
- Conducts and participates in meetings and clinics.
- This position requires excellent inter-personal, communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time, lift from ground to above shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and utilize telephone and radio communications.
Requires equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by six months to one year of advanced education and six months of related experience.

Requires a valid driver's license.
Must possess a current CPR/First Aid Certification within six (6) months of employment.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
- The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
