This position oversees the comprehensive development and implementation of programs and initiatives designed to address the unique needs of this population. The Associate Director serves as a central point of contact, providing guidance, resources, and mentorship to students who may face unique challenges in navigating the college experience. This role collaborates with Admissions and Welcome Center and student support areas to assist first-generation students in getting started in college and successfully transitioning into their academic journey and retention efforts for first-generation students. Develop and implement programs and initiatives specifically designed to address the needs of first-generation college students, including academic support, financial aid guidance, financial literacy, social integration, and career exploration Serve as a mentor to first-generation students, navigating campus resources and overcoming personal challenges Collaborate with Pathways Advising to support and coordinate the current First-Generation Initiative Program Develop and maintain strong relationships with external community partners offering resources and support to first-generation students Partner with Admissions and Welcome Center and Recruitment and Outreach to assist first-generation students with getting started in college, including application completion, enrollment steps, orientation, and initial registration processes Support first-generation students in their transition into college by coordinating onboarding experiences, early-term engagement activities, and proactive outreach during critical transition periods Identify barriers within admissions, onboarding, and early college processes and recommend improvements to better support first-generation student success Organize workshops, presentations, and social events to foster a sense of community and belonging among first-generation students Advise the First-Gen student club and Chair the First-Gen Committee Oversee the First-Gen Ambassadors scholarship program Track program metrics and outcomes to assess effectiveness and identify areas for improvement Stay up to date on current issues impacting first-generation college students and relevant best practices Contribute to developing and disseminating informational resources for first-generation students and their families Must be able to work occasional evenings to meet student needs Other duties as assigned QualificationsRequired Qualification: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university Strong interpersonal, communication, presentation, and organizational skills Two years of experience in an educational setting Strong computer skills and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications Ability to interact effectively and work collaboratively with various departments Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License, good driving record, and be insurable on Midland College’s insurance policy Preferred Qualification: Master’s degree from an accredited college or university Two years of college experience Able to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related major and career matters Physical Demands:   Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation Use of manual dexterity The person in this position frequently communicates with others verbally and electronically; must be able to exchange accurate information Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus Frequently moves equipment or paperwork weighing up to 25 pounds This position may require occasional travel for training, meetings, and events both in and out of town Duties indoors and some outdoors
