FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Position Details
The Department of Media and Communications Arts (MCA), and the Journalism Program, at the City College of New York (CCNY) invites applicants to apply for a tenure-track assistant professorship to teach undergraduate journalism. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with one of the most diverse student populations in the nation. Students earn a B.A. in communications with a concentration in journalism. Our focus is on community reporting, and we are looking for a candidate who has worked in daily journalism.
The ideal colleague will have a passion for journalism and a desire to share knowledge with the next generation of journalists. Candidates are expected to remain professionally active in hands-on reporting to add to the classroom experience and their scholarship. They will teach two to three journalism courses and guide students in analysis and critical thinking as they research and report about their communities. They will also oversee the program’s award-winning online publication Harlem View and advise two student club publications: The Paper and The Campus Magazine.
We are looking for a candidate who has strong fact-based storytelling skills and is willing to adapt creatively and utilize evolving techniques and technology. A successful candidate will have demonstrated flexibility and the ability to collaborate. Our program collaborates across disciplines and divisions at CCNY to offer students a complete education. In MCA, the candidate will work closely with program directors and professors in our Advertising & Public Relations, film and game design programs.
This position offers the opportunity to propose and create new courses and new platforms for journalistic inquiry and practice.
We welcome candidates with interests in hard news, political journalism, international journalism, reporting on culture, business and economic journalism, science and health journalism, environmental journalism, sports journalism, visual journalism, data journalism, and audio journalism and podcasting.
Qualifications
M.A. in journalism or communications and 10 years as a working journalist. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated continued professional accomplishments and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
Compensation
Salary Range: $76,937 - $94,909. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
