Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key client contact and day-to-day lead, translating client needs into actionable communications strategies aligned to business goals
  • Lead accounts with a collaborative, solutions-first mindset, providing both strategic and tactical counsel while setting a high bar for quality
  • Build and maintain strong client and partner relationships through transparency, communication, and reliability
  • Anticipate client needs and proactively deliver strategic guidance, industry insights, and trend-based recommendations
  • Stay informed on industry trends, news, and competitor activity to guide client programs
  • Partner with practice and account leadership to oversee account strategy, execution, and team operations, ensuring alignment with client goals and KPIs
  • Manage multiple projects and campaigns (e.g., media briefings, events, press materials, launches), ensuring timelines, budgets, and quality standards are met
  • Oversee day-to-day operations across teams, managing up on progress, flagging challenges early, and identifying solutions or pivots as needed
  • Mentor and support junior and mid-level team members, providing feedback and guidance to drive growth and accountability
  • Identify and communicate staffing challenges or resource needs to leadership

Requirements

  • 5-7 years (Supervisor) or 7-9 years (Director) of communications experience, with a strong mix of agency and/or in-house leadership roles across the sports or entertainment ecosystem, including work with professional sports leagues and teams, collegiate athletic conferences, sports talent and personalities, media rights holders (tv / streaming), consumer brands with significant sports partnerships or investments, and/or other relevant, transferrable experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, English, marketing, or a related field preferred
  • Experience managing and directing staff across multi-dimensional accounts (both up and down)
  • Proven expertise in managing communications workflows, operations, and onsite media around brand activations at major sporting and cultural events
  • Demonstrated proficiency in drafting media materials (biographies, press releases, media advisories, press kits, etc.) and media relations (ability to identify and craft creative story angles, developing targeted media pitches, and outreach to traditional and emerging media)
  • Existing media rolodex and proven track record of fostering strong relationships with journalists to generate meaningful earned media coverage – with a portfolio of tier one clips
  • Demonstrated understanding of digital, social, and emerging media and how they work together with traditional media relations
  • Ability to maintain a professional, client-ready demeanor and presence; keep a high standard of ethics and etiquette in all communications and interactions
  • Experience in providing guidance to entry and mid-level staffers; strong team building and mentorship aptitude
  • Desire to receive constructive feedback and grow from each client experience
  • Superior oral and written communication skills; an excellent eye for consistency, proofreading, and editing
  • Comprehensive understanding of Microsoft Office Suite and proficiency with Muck Rack, Cision, TV Eyes, Meltwater, Podchaser and other database + monitoring tools
  • Willingness and flexibility to at times work outside of traditional work hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays

Preferred

  • Agency experience is strongly preferred, but individuals with in-house experience managing multiple communications programs simultaneously will be considered.
  • Remote applicants will be considered, with preference given to those in or willing to relocate to New York or Los Angeles.
