AFRICAN LANGUAGE RESOURCE CTR (BL-ALRC-IUBLA) The National African Language Resource Center (NALRC) at Indiana University Bloomington is dedicated to advancing the teaching, learning, and accessibility of African languages in the United States. It supports learning by developing high-quality instructional resources, offering professional development opportunities, and fostering collaboration across African language programs nationwide. Seeking an experienced and imaginative Creative Textbook Designer to lead the visual and multimodal transformation of our African language textbooks. This role goes beyond traditional layout work. Our publications are evolving from low-cost, text-heavy materials into high-quality, full-color, multimedia-integrated learning systems. A person in this role understands that typography, color, layout, iconography, and media integration are not decorative elements but instructional and strategic tools and can translate pedagogical intent into compelling and accessible educational materials across print and digital formats. Department-Specific Responsibilities Designs and implements a cohesive visual identity across the textbook series. Creates scalable templates that are reusable and adaptable across multiple languages and proficiency levels. Develops structured design systems (typographic hierarchies, color palettes, grammar-highlighting conventions, iconography). Ensures visual consistency while allowing flexibility for language-specific needs. Manages file organization and version control for multi-language projects. Produces high-quality, full-color layouts using professional publishing tools (e.g., Adobe InDesign or equivalent advanced platforms). Prepares print-ready files optimized for print-on-demand and academic distribution. Designs for export across PDF, ePub, and web formats while preserving structural integrity. Experiments thoughtfully with contemporary multimodal design tools (including Artificial Intelligence) that enhance user engagement and accessibility. Designs layouts that integrate audio, video, and interactive elements through QR codes, embedded links, and structured digital workflows. Collaborates with instructional specialists to align visual design with pedagogical sequencing. Ensures smooth alignment between print text and corresponding multimedia assets. Works confidently within modern design and publishing ecosystems (Adobe Creative Suite, Pressbooks, HTML5 Package (H5P), Learning Management System (LMS) integrations, or equivalent tools). Applies accessibility standards in typography, color contrast, and layout. EDUCATION Required High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED) Preferred WORK EXPERIENCE Demonstrated experience designing textbooks or complex educational materials Skills Required Strong graphic design expertise Fluency in contemporary design and publishing tools Deep understanding of how visual systems shape learning experiences Ability to perform aesthetic judgment and technical precision Fluency in professional publishing software (Adobe InDesign required) Strong portfolio demonstrating advanced graphic design skills and typographic sophistication Experience integrating multimedia into print or digital learning products Understanding of user-centered design principles and accessibility standards Ability to work collaboratively with instructional designers, authors, and production teams Preferred Proficiency in an African language is highly desired Project Duration: Multi-project-based deliverables.
