Job Description

Responsibilities

  • As Communications Manager, you'll manage integrated communications through one of the most exciting chapters in the National Railway Museum's history – and celebrate its place at the heart of York Central, one of the UK's most significant cultural redevelopment programmes.
  • Your work will make sure the museum's transformation is understood, supported and celebrated, helping to secure lasting benefits for our audiences, our reputation and the wider organisation.
  • In collaboration with marketing, communications, visitor experience, and project teams, you’ll create campaigns that generate excitement, support operational change, deepen stakeholder connections, and increase the value of major capital investment.
  • Shaping visitor-facing marketing and communications is a big part of the role too, helping audiences navigate changing visitor journeys, operational developments and brand-new experiences.

Requirements

  • Experience of developing and delivering integrated communications in a complex or changing environment.
  • A strategic, audience-focused approach that turns complex projects into clear, compelling messages.
  • Well-honed stakeholder engagement approach enabling collaboration with senior leaders, partners, local residents, and community groups.
  • Hybrid working pattern, with an on-site presence required at least three days a week.
  • Location: York or Locomotion, Shildon.
  • Fixed term until January 2029.
  • Full time role, 35 hours per week.

Benefits

  • Meaningful work. We’re a mission-led organisation where the work you do supports us in Inspiring Futures.
  • Career growth. We offer enhanced support with personal and professional development.
  • Work/life balance. We offer 27 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays, along with flexible policies which support you and your home life.
  • Healthcare cash plan. Digital health tools, gym discounts and cashback towards your everyday healthcare costs.
  • Wellbeing. All our colleagues can access an employee assistance programme and other wellbeing support.
  • Colleague networks. Our colleague-led networks are an informal forum for colleagues to come together to discuss topics of shared interest and lived experience. They create a space for people to exchange ideas, discuss best practice, socialise and build a sense of community.
  • Enhanced contributory pension. To support you in saving for the future.
  • Interest-free loans. When you need a little extra cash for life events or home improvements.
  • Great discounts. Free entry to exhibitions, discounts in our shops and cafes, and access to other museums in the NMDC network.
