Job Summary

Own and steward Layton’s external messaging across markets, shaping the narrative and protecting the brand voice while guiding senior leaders and regional teams. Build and maintain media relationships, pursue thought leadership, and lead crisis and reputation management with a unified PR strategy that aligns with BD goals and market launches.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Own Layton's external communications strategy across markets; set messaging direction and ensure consistent voice and quality.
  • Provide communications counsel to senior leaders and regional teams on what to say and where it lands.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends and reputational risks; bring opportunities and concerns to leadership early.
  • Coordinate with content/production to reflect messaging in content calendars and agency amplification plans.
  • Lead PR efforts; build relationships with trade press and position Layton in target markets.
  • Set a high bar for earned media; pursue outbound storytelling in construction trade press, regional business journals, and broader media.
  • Pitch stories, secure placements, and coordinate executive interviews; manage media requests.
  • Develop crisis communications framework with leadership and ensure preparedness.
  • Lead a small communications team and guide PR priorities and story development.
  • Align strategy with BD events and market launches; ensure unified communications across units.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in communications, PR, or a related field
  • Proven experience developing and executing external communications strategies in a B2B environment
  • Track record in media relations, thought leadership, and reputation management
  • Strong understanding of how communications supports long sales cycles and relationship-driven business development
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and messaging skills: you own and direct brand voice across written and visual content
  • Experience providing communications counsel to senior leaders
  • Experience managing and developing teams
  • Experience providing strategic oversight to cross-functional partners
  • Ability to translate complex technical or industry concepts into compelling narratives
  • Familiarity with AI tools and platforms for content development, media monitoring, or analytics

Nice to Have

  • Construction, AEC, or professional services industry experience
  • Experience managing external PR or communications agencies
  • Experience with executive communications, speechwriting, and spokesperson preparation
  • Experience launching communications campaigns for new markets or offices
  • Experience with awards programs and executive positioning
  • Experience advising on sponsorship strategy and activation
  • Familiarity with industry publications and media landscape in construction or real estate sectors
