About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and thoughtful Staff Motion Designer to join our Design Innovation team at Pinterest. In this pivotal role, you will define and evolve Pinterest’s motion design language, ensuring clarity, coherence, and delight across our platform’s surfaces and flagship features. This position requires a hands-on, cross-functional leader who combines motion craft expertise, systems thinking, and design technology skills. Your work will establish reusable motion principles, patterns, tokens, and implementation guidance within our design system, directly impacting the quality and consistency of our user experiences.
You will collaborate closely with product and engineering teams to solve complex interaction challenges, develop tools and prototypes to facilitate exploration and scalable motion implementation, and ensure that motion enhances usability, understanding, and emotional connection. Your influence will extend from fine interaction details to the overall cohesion of Pinterest’s product ecosystem. Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in motion design, product design, interaction design, or a related field, with a strong portfolio demonstrating exceptional motion craftsmanship in digital products.
• Proven track record of influencing cross-functional teams and shaping product or design system directions at a senior or principal level.
• Deep understanding of motion and interaction design principles, including timing, choreography, easing, spring behavior, feedback, and transitions.
• Experience creating or evolving scalable motion systems—principles, tokens, pattern libraries, documentation, tooling, and governance.
• Practical fluency in partnering with engineers to implement complex animations, balancing performance, platform conventions, accessibility, and quality.
• Proficiency with prototyping tools, AI, code, or technical workflows to explore ideas and communicate design intent effectively.
• Strong product and systems thinking, connecting craft decisions to user needs, product strategy, and measurable impact.
• Excellent communication, storytelling, and presentation skills, capable of aligning diverse teams and stakeholders.
• Collaborative, low-ego attitude with a passion for learning, experimentation, mentoring, and inclusive design principles.
• Bachelor’s degree in design, animation, human-computer interaction, or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  

Responsibilities

• Define and continuously evolve Pinterest’s motion design language, including principles, interaction and transition patterns, timing, tokens, specifications, and guidelines.
• Lead motion direction for flagship and AI-forward experiences, using motion to clarify states, cause-and-effect, hierarchy, feedback, and system responsiveness.
• Collaborate horizontally with product designers, engineers, product managers, researchers, and content teams to align motion strategies with overall product goals.
• Transform high-craft explorations into scalable contributions to the design system, reducing ad-hoc implementation and improving consistency across products.
• Rapidly prototype and validate motion ideas using various mediums such as motion studies, design tools, code, AI-enabled tools, or custom prototypes.
• Partner closely with engineering teams during implementation to address technically complex animation challenges while maintaining performance and accessibility standards.
• Develop lightweight tools, templates, and workflows to enable quick exploration and reliable implementation of motion concepts.
• Stay at the forefront of AI-enabled motion and visual creation tools, applying them strategically to enhance ideation, prototyping, and production processes.
• Conduct motion quality reviews, provide actionable feedback, and mentor team members on motion principles, systems thinking, and prototype craftsmanship.
• Communicate the rationale, tradeoffs, and user impact of motion decisions clearly to teams, leaders, and stakeholders to ensure alignment and high-quality outcomes.
