Job Summary/Basic Function
Weber State University’s Marketing & Communications department is seeking a detail-oriented, culturally fluent individual with strong translation skills to help fill a temporary full-time position at the university as an English to Spanish Content Translator
This is a temporary position funded to last no longer than 12 months, at which time it will be reviewed for a possible extension for another 12 months
Responsibilities include:
- Serve as the translator and Spanish-language expert to help the university reach Spanish-speaking students, prospective students, and their parents
- Work closely with the Marketing & Communications department, Community Education Center, Admissions, and other stakeholders to determine and prioritize translation needs; review Utah demographics to determine appropriate translations that meet the needs of the widest possible Spanish-speaking audience in our geographic region.
- Write, translate, review, and edit a variety of products which could include press releases, websites, social media, newsletters, fliers, ads, brochures, and other projects as assigned
- Ensure Spanish-language publications have correct spelling and grammar, compelling content, and professional polish
- Consistently seek ways to improve the quality of Spanish-language products and services provided by the university
- Work under deadline pressure and accommodate quick-turnaround translation needs in crisis scenarios; coordinate with WSU Public Safety and Police Department; translate portions of their webpages
- Review and translate key sections of weber.edu, using appropriate language and tone; special focus on Admissions homepage, Building Puentes homepage, and pages targeted toward parents
- Work collaboratively with key stakeholders across campus to include writers, designers, marketing coordinators, and university leadership
- Maintain a glossary or style guide to ensure institutional terms remain consistent across all translated products
Required Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in translation and/or language-related fields (including English, communication, journalism, public relations, marketing)
- Native or near native language proficiency in both English and Spanish (skills at Advanced High or Superior ACTFL proficiency).
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred:
- Demonstrated ability to translate, edit, revise, or rewrite text-based content in Spanish
- Strong written communication, copyediting, and proofreading skills in the target language and attention to detail
- Strong knowledge of the cultures related to both languages in order to understand cultural references and nuances
- At least 2 years of previous work experience as a professional translator
- Knowledge of transcreation, localization, or audiovisual translation
- Knowledge of Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools and other translation technologies
