About DHD

DHD is a Chicago-based marketing and advertising agency with a long-standing reputation for creative excellence and strong client relationships. For over 45 years, the firm has partnered with organizations across industries including manufacturing, hospitality, tourism, and consumer services to develop impactful marketing campaigns and digital experiences.

Our team combines creative talent, strategic thinking, and practical problem-solving to help clients grow. As a mid-sized agency, we offer the opportunity to work closely with leadership, contribute directly to the company’s operations, and make a visible impact on how the business runs.

About the Role:

DHD is seeking a Controller to serve as the company's primary financial leader, with full hands-on ownership of all accounting functions — including AP, AR, invoicing, and day-to-day financial operations. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on bringing structure and clarity to financial systems and takes pride in running a tight, well-organized accounting operation.

The Controller will have full ownership of DHD's accounting function and play a critical role in strengthening financial processes and controls as the company continues its QuickBooks Online transition. You'll operate as DHD's primary in-house financial professional — with direct access to leadership and genuine accountability for the integrity of the company's financials.

The role begins hybrid in Chicago while systems and processes are stabilized, with a planned transition to fully remote within 3–6 months once accounting operations are running smoothly.

Responsibilities:

  • Own and maintain the company's accounting records in QuickBooks Online
  • Own and manage the full client invoicing cycle, from issuance through payment receipt and revenue tracking
  • Perform bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations
  • Process and manage all accounts payable, vendor payments, and expense approvals
  • Manage accounts receivable, including collections follow-up and aging report management
  • Coordinate payroll with Paychex
  • Lead and own the monthly close process and deliver accurate financial statements to leadership
  • Oversee and complete the QuickBooks Online transition, establishing scalable accounting systems and workflows
  • Design, enforce, and document internal controls and accounting policies
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date AR/AP sub-ledgers and daily bookkeeping records in QuickBooks Online, ensuring timely reconciliation to the general ledger

Benefits:

  • Medical Insurance — DHD covers 70% of employee premiums and 65% for spouse and family coverage
  • Life and Disability Insurance
  • Paid Time Off — 13 days annually
  • Retirement Savings Plan with employer match (DHD matches 50 cents on the dollar up to a qualifying contribution)

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 7–10 years of accounting experience, with at least 2–3 years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role
  • Be located and allowed to work in the United States
  • Strong experience with QuickBooks Online
  • Experience with full-cycle accounting, including hands-on AP, AR, invoicing, financial reporting, and GAAP compliance
  • Comfortable operating as a department of one — hands-on across AP, AR, invoicing, and reporting — with a high degree of autonomy
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Experience helping companies transition or clean up accounting systems (particularly QuickBooks Online) is strongly preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA strongly preferred
