Job Description
Job Summary
Hillsdale College seeks to restore excellence to American K-12 education, public and private, through the work of the Office of K-12 Education. The Office advises classical private and public charter schools across the country, focusing on five areas: board governance, school leadership, curriculum, school culture, and classical pedagogy. This position focuses primarily on leader support as provided through regular conferences and publications and direct guidance and coaching of leaders of its affiliated schools, focusing on the academic and operational aspects of running a K-12 school.
This position reports to and collaborates with the Director of School Leader Support to accomplish this work, maintaining close connections with the leaders of Hillsdale-affiliated schools and bringing the teachings of Hillsdale College to a growing network of classical educators.
Essential Job Functions
  • Collaborate with the Director of School Leader Support and the rest of the School Support Team to provide comprehensive guidance to the schools affiliated with Hillsdale College based on Hillsdale College’s Best Practices for K-12 schools and its entire K-12 program
  • With the Director of School Leader Support, develop resources to support leaders of affiliated schools
  • With the Director of School Leader Support and others in the K-12 Education Office, the Spencer Graduate School of Education, and other departments at the College, cultivate the school leader pipeline, including recruitment, marketing, programming, coaching, and professional development
  • In working with leaders, the Assistant Director of School Leader Support will coach and guide school leaders and leadership teams and support governing boards according to the K-12 Best Practices and other frameworks developed in conjunction with the School Support Team
  • Visit Hillsdale’s affiliated K-12 schools on in coordination with the School Support Team, to provide specific support to the school leader, to observe the school, and to give presentations to faculty and parents


Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s is preferred
  • Past or current service in a charter or private school as Headmaster or Principal
  • Knowledge of classical education and Hillsdale’s approach to K-12 schooling, and a deep appreciation of the role a leader’s decisions have on the culture and functioning of a school

Other Skills
  • Serve as a representative of Hillsdale College at education conferences and other events
  • Give presentations on the work of the Office of K-12 Education at Hillsdale College events in town and across the country
  • Participate in recording videos and podcasts for the Office of K-12 Education’s online Library of resources for schools

Physical Demands
Personal Characteristics
The K-12 Education Office interacts frequently with College staff, visitors, and donors. A neat appearance and a pleasant demeanor are essential. Staff members must represent the College well and act in support of its mission.

Serve as an excellent representative of Hillsdale College to promote the liberal arts, the College’s original Articles of Association and operating principles stated in the Staff Code of Commitment. The Mission Statement should be considered in all aspects of the position. The teaching of Christian faith shall remain a conspicuous aim of the College.
