Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Lead development of real-time media and social media responses, including reactive statements, holding statements, Q&A, and messaging frameworks for emerging issues.
  • Develop and adapt content across multiple platforms—including media materials, executive communications, social media, and digital channels—translating complex topics into compelling, platform-specific narratives (e.g., media pitches, social media posts, executive talking points, and statements) while ensuring message consistency and audience relevance.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with top-tier media, proactively positioning the company and its leaders as trusted, go-to sources while identifying and cultivating long-term storytelling opportunities that advance corporate reputation and business priorities.
  • Lead rapid-response communications during issues and crisis situations, partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to assess risk, shape messaging, and protect the company’s reputation.
  • Provide strategic communications counsel to company leaders and executives.
  • Develop strategies and execute tactics to raise awareness of H&R Block’s retail and/or digital tax services among external outlets.
  • Effectively communicate complex tax issues in a manner reporters and taxpayers can understand. Quickly write and edit media materials such as news releases, pitches, key messages, etc., using AP Style, to support external communications strategies. Materials must often be developed under tight deadlines and with little direction.
  • Develop strong working relationships with reporters and/or bloggers from national media outlets and serve as a company spokesperson. Respond to media inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Provide media training and coaching to internal interview candidates.
  • Quickly respond to and resolve potential media issues and crisis situations.
  • Effectively manage relationships, workflow and budgets of PR agencies and contractors.
  • Oversee the tracking and analysis of media campaign results
  • Collaborate with other teams within the department including social media, internal communications, and the field communications team, to ensure consistent messaging across platforms.
  • Oversee the content on the company’s Online Press Center. Identify ways the tool can more effectively serve external media outlets.
  • Always act as a company ambassador, reflecting the unique and positive culture of H&R Block in all communications, discussions and during all events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Marketing, Business, or other related field
  • 8 years of demonstrated success in communications, public relations, marketing communications, and web communication experience
  • Ability to engage in strategic discussions and effectively communicate, counsel, and influence senior leaders of H&R Block with confidence and credibility
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, and self-directed professional who fosters a collaborative, productive workplace and serves as a positive ambassador for H&R Block
  • Strong team player with a proactive, can-do mindset and the ability to balance short- and long-term priorities in a dynamic, change-oriented environment
  • Proven ability to gather, analyze, and translate complex information into clear, compelling, and relevant messages for external audiences
  • Demonstrated strategic planning, organizational, prioritization, and analytical problem-solving skills
  • Effective project management capabilities, including managing multiple initiatives simultaneously while meeting established timelines
