Job Summary

Shape and own the public sector communications agenda for a policy-focused league, directing a nine-person team to craft messaging for member cities, officials, media, and the public while advancing policy priorities and protecting reputation.

  • Leadership: Own the overall communications strategy and cross-functional brand narrative.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Manage messaging for diverse audiences including cities, officials, and the press.
  • Impact & Accountability: Tie communications to legislative priorities, member engagement, and reputation protection.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Lead communications, marketing, media relations, publications, and digital engagement.
  • Report to the Chief Operating Officer and serve on the Leadership Team.
  • Shape how the League communicates with member cities, elected officials, employees, the media, policymakers, and the public.
  • Oversee an experienced communications team of nine.
  • Develop and execute integrated communications strategies.
  • Advance the League’s mission, strengthen member engagement, protect and enhance the organization’s reputation, and support legislative and organizational priorities.

Requirements

  • Experience as a senior-level communications executive with strategic vision and operational excellence.
  • Exceptional writing and messaging skills.
  • Collaborative leadership style with ability to lead cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to shape communications for diverse audiences including member cities, elected officials, employees, media, policymakers, and the public.

Preferred

  • Experience with public sector communications (municipal/government).
  • Track record of engaging member organizations and stakeholders.
