Job Description

Lead university-wide communications through strategic storytelling, media relations, and digital content to strengthen Widener’s brand across campus and media.

  • Own and execute strategic university communications, including media relations, events, and digital storytelling.
  • Create and distribute press releases, media advisories, op‑eds, student columns, and targeted pitches.
  • Identify, prepare, and coach deans and faculty for media engagement and op‑ed development.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director of Communications to shape digital strategies for university websites and social channels.
  • Produce and share content that advances strategies and reinforces the university’s mission and brand.
  • Work with departments to develop and enhance events for broader visibility to prospective students and media.
  • Write and edit for university publications including Widener Insider and Widener Magazine.
  • Manage or support the distribution of the Monday Daily News Briefing and related communications.
  • Serve on university committees as assigned.
  • Track media releases and pitches, and prepare reports on digital performance and newsroom metrics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Five (5) years of experience in public relations or journalism. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Ability to recognize emerging issues and address them before they become problems.
  • Superior written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills. Superior brand storytelling and editing skills.
  • Ability to explain scientific or technical research in layman’s terms.
  • Ability to develop strategic initiatives aligned with departmental goals and university priorities.
  • Ability to build trust and foster a team mentality with academic/administrative departments.
  • Ability to work independently, think on the fly, and be flexible.
  • Ability to develop creative ways to tell stories and attract media attention.

Preferred

  • Previous social media and/or website content maintenance experience.
  • Photography and video shooting and editing experience.
