Job Description

Responsibilities

  • The Assistant Director is a key leader within University Communications, responsible for the development and execution of Florida State University’s news and messaging strategy. This role serves as a high-level advisor to university administrators, translating institutional priorities into impactful communications that elevate FSU’s profile nationally and internationally.
  • Leads the planning and distribution of high-impact news and research content across university websites, social media, and internal channels. Manages the assignment and editorial review process for professional writers and campus contributors to ensure all materials meet institutional standards and objectives.
  • Supervises a team of professional news writers and oversees the hiring and training of student interns, fostering a high-standard production environment. Develops and documents clear policies for content production and news dissemination to be used by University Communications and partners across campus.
  • Researches and writes speeches, talking points, and strategic communications for university leadership. Produces news releases, media advisories, and web content; oversees the strategy and creation of key internal and external newsletters.
  • Coordinates with the AVP, Senior Director, and other top-level administrators to identify and share critical university news. Acts as a central point of contact for campus communicators to ensure a unified voice and consistent messaging across all FSU departments.
  • Provides communications counsel to internal departments and maintains active relationships with media members to enhance story pitching and coverage. Monitors the 24-hour news cycle and media reports to keep leadership informed of relevant trends, risks, and opportunities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and four years experience related to media, communications, and/or marketing services or a combination of post high school education and experience equal to eight years.
