Job Summary

Own and mentor a crisis-ready strategic communications function for a university, guiding frontline writers, executive storytelling, and campus-wide earned media across digital channels.

  • Storytelling & Editorial Ownership: supervise front-line writers and edit social and campus content for external and internal audiences.
  • Issues Management & Crisis Response: lead 24/7/365 issues/crisis messaging strategy and execution.
  • Leadership Coverage: act as head of the strategic communications team in the director's absence and coordinate cross-channel content planning.

  • Lead supervision of front-line strategic communications writers and executive writing for campus leadership.
  • \n
  • Oversee issues management strategy and crisis response execution.
  • \n
  • Provide leadership of the strategic communications team in the director’s absence.
  • \n
  • Plan and create content for the university’s website, digital newsletters, and social media channels.
  • \n
  • Edit and write content to tell UMKC’s story across earned and owned media for internal and external audiences.
  • \n
  • Serve as a primary editor of social media copy and ensure messaging consistency.
  • \n
\nRequirements\n
    \n
  • A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 4 years of experience are necessary.
  • \n
\nPreferred\n
    \n
  • A Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism or Communications or equivalent direct experience required.
  • \n
  • Ten years minimum experience in journalism and/or public relations and digital communications.
  • \n
  • Strong news judgment.
  • \n
  • Sound knowledge of editorial and journalistic principles and respect for deadlines.
  • \n
  • Knowledge of digital content strategy.
  • \n
  • Excellent storytelling, organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
