Job Summary

Own cross-channel communications with a strong emphasis on turning insights into engaging, shareable content for both internal and external audiences, while managing digital channels and incident communications at high priority moments.

  • Growth/Content Ownership: Lead multi-format communications, oversee digital channels (website and social) and coordinate creative production across teams.
  • Incident & Media Response: Drive out-of-hours media handling, internal briefings, and rapid public-facing updates during major incidents.
  • Campaign Collaboration: Align with stakeholders to plan campaigns, measure outcomes, and tailor messages for diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Produce well-developed, appropriate, insight-led creative materials to be used across a range of internal and external platforms to highlight key messages.
  • Produce well written and accurate communications suitable for different internal and external audiences in a range of formats, including news releases, newsletters, social media posts, web content, articles for inclusion in internal publications, information leaflets and posters and other corporate documents.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify, plan and develop campaigns and content across a range of internal and external channels, advising on the best way to communicate and engage audiences, and evaluating outcomes.
  • Lead planning and management of all digital channels including our website and social media channels.
  • Proactively engage with operational colleagues, stakeholders and project leads to plan and deliver a creative product that tells their story in the best way for the intended audience.
  • Play an active role in external and internal responses for BFRS during major and significant incidents including internal communication, media handling, social media, photography, video, website management and briefing stakeholders, taking into account our responsibilities under the Civil Contingencies Act and working together with communication teams from other agencies. This includes attending events and incidents to manage communication and as part of an out-of-hours evening and weekend on-call rota.
  • Produce photography, video and visual products – capturing, designing, animating, branding, scripting, storyboarding and editing. To develop simple corporate graphics and marketing materials, including digital content and traditional printed materials, and to work with an external designer on projects, to ensure materials are appropriate, engaging and reflect the Service’s brand.
  • To support with planning, managing, attending and collecting content for Service corporate events including staff engagement events, awards, open days, etc.

The area consists principally of rural landscape and incorporates a number of market towns, including Ampthill, Biggleswade, Woburn and Leighton Buzzard. Larger towns include Bedford, Kempston, Luton, Stopsley and Dunstable. Bedfordshire and Luton borders with Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire.In addition to our large and diverse community risk we also have a number of special risks including London Luton Airport, along with a significant road network including the M1 and A1 motorways. Bedfordshire is growing as a national distribution hub and has a number of large industrial sites and warehouses. One of the busiest commuter rail links in the country runs from Bedford south to London and beyond. Within our boundary we also have a significant stock of heritage buildings and environmental sites of special interest. Countywide rivers present us with special problems during spate flooding conditions.To protect our communities and respond to emergency calls we have 14 strategically positioned Fire Stations and an Emergency Communication Centre.There are five wholetime stations, crewed 24 hours a day, at Luton, Stopsley, Dunstable, Bedford and Kempston. The fire stations at Bedford and Kempston are also supported by on-call personnel.Leighton Buzzard is day crewed by wholetime staff during the daytime and reverts to an on-call duty system during the night.In addition, we have 8 stations at Ampthill, Biggleswade, Harrold, Potton, Sandy, Shefford, Toddington and Woburn which are crewed by on-call firefighters.
